You're likely right about premium glass, but it depends on his budget obviously.  I have bought a few vintage Canon L lenses,  including the monster FDn 500mmm 4.5L. It certainly isn't fun to use ...

Depends what you call old. I use some tamron sp adaptall 2 lenses and a canon fd 500mm 4.5l for wildlife.  While i have to shoot fully manual,  the IQ is amazing and work great on the S5.
