Don't confuse focus mode with the focus point. The focus point, where the spot reading would be taken, is chosen from one of the cells defined by the focus mode.

It would be more meaningful to use lossless compression for this test. Lossy compression (e.g. JPEG) introduces another set of possibilities. Try PNG16.

Both noise and finer detail could explain the size difference. Sharper edges cause fewer distinct pixels, not more, as there are fewer transitional colors.
