Good to see a photographer being honoured. Gillian Wearing is a well regarded sculptor.

Hussar43: I am delighted that a camera manufacturer has the guts to bring this out in an era of digital image revolution. Well done, however good and bad it is. They like Ricoh see the competition not as the compact camera market. But the smartphone. This camera is for a new generation of photographers who have only ever known smartphone and touchscreen and for whom digital imaging will replace the old world of photography. The camera will go back to being a fashion accessory as it was in the 70s.

It’s a hobby so I guess people spend money on it if they want to. It’s the kind of present your third wife would buy when really you wanted a Leica.

I am astonished at the level of negativity in these comments about this product. Is it a nationality thing? Not invented here syndrome? Or just hostility to the smart phone as a concept? I don’t know where any photographers would be without the people willing to take personal risk in the development of photography technology? I guess sitting at computer screens in bed sits as they do now. I really have seldom read such testaments to the negativity latent in human nature. Try and support someone who is trying to make a difference.

lightwriter: I'm sure I've seen this concept multiple times in Kickstarter...

I like the sound of it. Good luck. I will certainly look at something like this when my Ricoh dies. I just want to have manual controls of exposure and aperture size and auto iso and to be able to shoot raw, then I’m happy. Oh and a good lens. Don’t need apples other bells and whistles.

Hussar43: Good for street photography. Falls apart for landscape. Still need a good 28mm lens for Z and this isn't it quite obviously. A pity there is no equivalent of the F mount 28 1.8G and I guess because this is out now, it will be a long time before we see it. Oh well back to DSLR. Again.

Your point is? You dont like me speculating that the Nikon 28mm is exactly what Nikon says it is?

I’m sure they are. I don’t use zoom lenses anymore, I don’t know where to stand.

There is an awful lot more to resolving power than sharpness. Sadly people think they are the same thing. So manufacturers give people what they want. It is unlikely in the extreme that this lens has the same resolving power for landscape photography as a 1.4E. Its not what it's for.

A good 28mm lens will give you the same benefit (if you want it) as a view camera that everything is in focus.. This is what i use it for.

good resolution at distance with a small aperture. None of the examples have it. It's what Nikon says - its a 'fun' lens. Glad they made it but its not a 1.8g or 1.4e equivalent, nor is it meant to be.
