Gord Clark - Rockburn QC: Seems to me a better solution would be to ditch the uber-long and heavy lens for a Vivitar 800mm f8 Catadioptric lens - short light (2.6 lbs) and affordable.

Grant you, its an manual focus jobbie, but it promises the same performance. So the aperature is fixed at f8 - now just find a shutter speed that will cover the majority of lighting conditions and shoot - away.

Promises, but it won't deliver. Other than the fact that it's rarer then hen's teeth, it just isn't all that sharp.

On article Preview: Canon PowerShot G1 X large sensor zoom compact (775 comments in total)

A wonderful camera permanently attached to a totally uninteresting lens. 4x zoom is fine, if it were 25-100 equivalent at f2-f2.8. Yes, that would be a large lens, but it would be worth it.

I applaud Canon for a large-sensor compact, and I hope they'll be doing more interesting things with that sensor in the future. But this camera... pass.

I'll be over in the corner drooling over the X-Pro1.
