With finger marks from dirt, sweat and natural oil from your skin, it will be filthy and totally unattractive (not that it would be to start with) in no time.

As a long term 13 year permanent resident of Korea, I can tell you it is one of the safest places on the planet. I have often left my phone and camera bag on a table in a coffee shop while I go to the counter to order and I have no fear of it ever being stolen. It just doesn't happen here.
In Korea, if it doesn't belong to you, then don't touch it. I assume it would be a similar situation in Japan as they have a similar culture and basic values.
