  • Thanks for the comprehensive reply.  I went with a Sony a6400 and loving it so far.  I have way more keeper shots already.
  • Thanks for input.  However the difference between the focussing between the VF and live view is due to the differences in how it focusses (i.e. contract vs phase detect).  Unfortunately the ...
  • Thanks.  What would you say specifically about the using a manually selected focus point in the centre, pointed at something which is never in focus using the viewfinder, and in fact things 1 inch ...
  • It was bought new, probably around 2010.  I remember using it in full auto mode back then and thinking that pictures looked good compared with my point and shoot but not good enough to be worth ...
  • Hi.  I manually selected the centre focus point whilst using Av mode.  In the same way that if I was doing a portrait I would manually choose a focus point over an eye.
  • Thanks for your responses in red.  These are the exact same things I am thinking.
  • Hi, yes sorry I see what you mean.  I manually selected the centre point to make sure I could specifically focus on the centre battery.
  • Hi, yes I took the shots exactly how you have described. Every lens I have seems to have about an inch in front of the focus point in focus and then that slightly improves as DoF gets wider.
  • My I, sorry I don’t understand your point. I used single focus to focus on the middle battery to get that battery in focus. The same way I would use single focus to focus on someone’s eye. Why ...

  • Thanks for the response.  I used Flickr as there were so many photos and I thought they all put each other in context instead of uploading a select few. As per my original post, I photographed the ...
  • That makes sense.  Just seems disappointing that I can't shoot any wider than f8 if I want to focus on an eye (anything f1.8 - 8 will throw the face out of focus).  Probably a waste of time buying ...
  • Thanks, I have done this and it is correct. Everything I have read such as this https://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3291361 also suggests that the diopter has no impact on a cameras autofocus ...
  • Here is a picture at f4 focussed on the middle battery. At f4 the furthest right battery is sharper and the middle (where the focus point is) is not sharp at all. The DOF at this distance should ...
  • Thanks for the reply.  I'm guessing by auto you mean having the camera in full auto and not auto focus (versus manual focus) since I was in auto focus.  I'll try full auto mode tomorrow.  I don't ...
  • Oh I can answer that!  Yes they do, one uses phase detection and one uses contrast (I think), the Liveview is supposedly a lot more accurate, but is too slow to realistically photo my kids.
  • Created discussion thread Newbie cannot focus properly
Hi everyone, Please be gentle with me as brand new to photography. I have a canon eos 550d with the kit lens, and prime 55mm 1.8. I have been really struggling getting pictures of my kids in focus ...
