Pentax K1 .... 2430 & rising
:o)

I bet that
this week Pentax K1 will have over 2500 comments.

Hmmm it seems that I'll loose my bet - the energy of commentators rapidly falls down.

I think all according to the worse parts of the review has been communicatet and there is nothing to tell about the better parts.

McBrian: Haven't read all the posts so forgive it's been mentioned already.

The exif for the AF tests currently posted show SR was on, was the camera tripod mounted? It has always been the case that SR should be switched off when mounted on a fixed support although the K1 manual does not specifically mention this, but it does state that SR is automatically switched off when using remote or self timer so it's logical to deduce that SR should be off when mounted on a tripod.

I think the in body Stabilisation seems to be a little more robust than a stabilisation in the optics. I do a lot of landscape and architecture photos, and I often forget to switch the the SR off on the tripod. I allways use a Yongnuo 602 remote control which uses the electrical remote port, that does not deactivate the SR. When I take photos from bridges or on a wooden floor in old buildings the SR helps a lot.

Professor999: Limited lens selection?
The new lenses cover a range from 15-450mm
many at F2.8.
If anybody has LBA there are a wealth of 'older' lenses such as the 31, 48 & 77mm.
How many lenses does one actually need?
Considering the camera has just been released & has Pro level lenses covering 15-450mm, I'm curious as to the wording 'limited'.

This type of limited wasn't ment.
And your definition of Pentax ''limited'' small form factor excellent optical design, mainly metal is very good.

Here limited means, not enough lenses, and the complete range from 8 to 800 not covered.
The Range is covered from 15 to 450 and 560 with new lenses, mainly zooms
A lot of good Lenses 31, 43, 50, 77 are available, but there could be a better coverage with true FF lenses

And some of the newer APSC-Lenses are capable of doing FF

You see there is a limited number of lenses available. :) :) but is this a real con. (I'm not complaining about that) There is no need for pentax to have every lens two or three times

A cheap one for the entry level (dark)
A good one without Stabi.
A good one with Stabi

all lenses are in in Body stabilized with Pentax (could have been mentioned as a pro standalone or as a amendement to the pro of Stabilisation).

Professor999: 'Poor default JPEG settings'
Completely subjective.
Yes, it's a default which can be changed if I don't like it.
I take it out of the box, set it up the way 'I' want it-customisation-then take photos.
& that's a CON!

Thats typical, There are thirteen different settings available.
Which one should I choose as default for out of the box.
- japanese prefer bright
- I prefer vivid
- Seattle likes natural they've written somewhere in the better part of the review ( most of it is much better than the AF-sektion).
When the take natural japan will grumble They can't win. But making that's a con unprofessional.

And don't forget each of the setting is customizable.

Don't you see that there are all the Non-Zoom lenses missing:
A pro wont use Zooms and there are only "old" 31, 43, 77 mm prime and the 100mm Macro available.
The 200 und 300 can only be used and are not designed and everything behind 600mm 2.8 is missing.

You see it's limited. :)
You can't work with this equipment.

LightBug: Rishi, can you please answer my questions below regarding your straight line AFC test?

1. How far was the cyclist away from the camera when the sequence starts? DOF with 200mm F2.8 is quite shallow, depending on distance, so your claim that focus point being on the shirt infers the face should be in focus may not hold if the distance is too short, and especially when cyclist gets nearer.

2. You claim focus point was on the cyclist's shirt, which is off-center towards the upper focus points, yet EXIF shows the focus point was the center one, was there an error in your focus point set up? If indeed the focus point was not even on the shirt, one can certainly expect the face would not be in focus.

Rishi Sanyal

I think 33% fail is better as 50% fail before.
I'm waiting still for your replay at my questions. You said you've used focus points above and I proved the contrary! What is your answer to this.

Just another question, what was the distance for the first and for the last photo - I'm interested in the distances for the DOF-calculation. Thank you

Thanks Chris M Williams.
Because of Adobe, this line is killed in the exifs und you don't Get the SW-Version, really not your problem or fault.

What I'm concerned of ist the Firmware version aside of that
DSP Firmware Version : 1.10.20.05 my K1
DSP Firmware Version : 1.00.00.00 DPR's K1.
This may be a reason for problems too.

And you can be quite shure, that I checked your pictures from IMGP2813.jpeg to IMGP2813.jpeg. Thank you for redoing it.

From the exiftool 10.22 point of view it is
Focus Mode : AF-C (Focus-priority)
AF Point Selected : Center; Single Point

And as far I can see this Focus point hits at least the helmet in the middle of the picture. From my point of view the results (hit-rate) is better now. And I'm quite shure that a sports-camera will top this easily. The rest increasing the hitrate will be done by the experience of the photographer by getting used too.

Hi Chris M Williams, I posted this before,

When checking the AF-C second picture set I found the following in the exifs:

My K-1
Software : PENTAX K-1 Ver. 1.10
DSP Firmware Version : 1.10.20.05

DPR camera
Software : Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6.5.1 (Macintosh)
Drive Mode : Continuous; No Timer; Shutter Button; Single Exposure
Focus Mode : AF-C (Focus-priority)
DSP Firmware Version : 1.00.00.00

The Software Version of the DPR K-1 I can't see, because Lightroom has changed this field.

Is it possible that DPR got a pre production unit, with old camera software. If this is the case, ricoh should send them a camera at the actual state.

joergensmi: @Rishi Sanyal "AF is not just about sports." AF is not only AF_C with pentax, why do you always speak of AF when you explicitly mean AF-C. I didn't see any negative comments about the AF-S option.
Did you test AF-C
- with 9 points
- with all points
- with the selectable point
- SEL-S (9) , SEL-M (25), SEL-L (33)

- Did you test contrast focus

There are some questions to your fotos.
Did you exchange them this morning? (06.07.2016)

Just another question:
Is it correct that the small picture in the lower left corner is the complete picture, especially in the section of the center AF point in AF-C? If yes, please can you explain why the central autofocus point is in the middle of the left tibia of the sports man. (this is the part of cyclist moving heavily). I would have taken the face or the helmet for the test.

Your test in total seems to be good, but some wording concerning AF in general could be improved to be precise. Most of the problems discussed here are about the wording

Thank you for the clarification.

And yes you can't win. :)

John McMillin: I'm not worried about lack of available Pentax lenses. There are new versions of the two lenses that every ambitious photog/lens collector seems to require, the f2.8 zooms that cover 24-200 mm. Within that range lies a range of luscious primes and Limiteds. The real shortage is in the long telephoto range. That's important to many, but still it's a market niche, not a universal weakness.

Real shortage? 5 new Zooms
15-30 2.8
24-70 2.8
70-200 2.8
150-450 4.5-5.6
28-105 3.5-5.6
and the 560 mm 5.6

I think the "complete" Range is covered primarily. It would be fine if there will be some darker Zooms as a low weight option.
And some prime lenses added to the good existing one.

tkbslc: Put away the pitchforks, guys. Did you really think this was going to be a class leading camera for sports, wildlife and video? Has anything in Pentax's history ever given you the impression that it would be? Even if it had uber tracking AF, it's still only 5fps, so who was going to pick it for sports anyway?

This is a class-leading camera for image quality at a bargain price. It's essentially a weather sealed Nikon D810 with weak tracking AF for barely more than half the price. That's a huge compliment and still a great value.

Problems in the AF-C modes
I missread this section on page 6 in your report about the focus problems too. I'm astonished about the bad results with the AF-C and the central focus point, I've got different results.

I´ve got my best results in AF-C with 9 focus points. With more focuspoints I've got missfocussing, because the system found something else interesting, especially when the object didn't fill the focus area. The AF-C mode with the center point it works fine if the object of interest is in the center.

Just another question:

Carlos Loff: Im going for this camera, I just hope the Pixel Shift can be used for the rest of the features when we disconnect the Horizon one ---

First of all there can be several lines the camera wrongly considers the Horizon and secondly sometimes the Horizon line must not be horizontal for the picture to be straight, because, for example on a river or buildings line, they may be slightly drifting away from viewer (not 100% frontal) and therefore they must not be exactly straight on the final picture --- There is only one type of lines that assures us the picture is rightfully straight - Verticals at the centre of the frame, providing those lines belong to elements we know are straight-vertical in nature - buildings, statues, water falling, etc

The feature using horizont correction within +- 1deg (I think or was 2) can be optionally switched on / off. (Menu: Camera /panel 4/ third item from top).

It is witched of by default.

I hope this will help

Mac McCreery: Great camera. The AF may be sub par, but who needs blazing fast AF for its intended use?
As for the availability of lenses, I seem to recall that Sony were initially in the same, if not a worse, position. I'm sure that Ricoh will build upon the existing line.
Pound for pound, it has to be right up there. Well done!

It's quite true that der continuous AF-C ist not on the level of the typical sports cameras, but the camera is not designed for that.

And the AF-C is capable of mare than basic tracking.. I've done some series shots in show jumping and 10 of 11 shots were fine. The next time I'll use jpg only for that to get longer series. (horse nearly jumping towards me )
It would be fine if the raw shooting could be expanded behind 17 shots

A really interesting review.

But your results for the AF systems, does not fit to my experiences with this camera, Maybe there has something gone wrong? I think it would be useful to give it another try with a correct configured camera.

And there should be a second look on the pixel shift feature,

It works fine with windows 7 professional 64 Bit and the following browsers

1 Firefox
2 Chrome
3 Chromium
4 Opera, but here the liveview is flickering.

It works with a Samsung mobile and android 2.6.3 and opera classic - but slow because of the "old" mobile.

At a hardware store I tried it with an asus 6" mobile and a samsung galaxy tab it worked fine in both cases.
