I really like how you can see one pilot looking over at the other one.

I have tried to get a shot like this before, but was never able to. It seems to take a tiny bit of skill, many failed attempts, and a lot of luck. Each plane is going about 500 mph, for a closing speed approaching 1,000 mph. If an F/A-18 is 56 feet long, that works out to about 0.038 seconds in which the two planes are overlapped. My camera (Nikon D3000) can take 3 frames per second, so a lot of luck is needed here. From the Gary, Indiana Air Show, July 2016.

  • Thanks very much!  It's very cool to get props like that from another photographer.  :-)  I actually had something like that in mind before ever getting to the air show.  So I was pretty excited ...
  • Replied in VR article
Thanks for the link.  Yes, excellent info about VR in there.  Actually, I think that the bythom site (and all the little sub sites) is a great resource.  I thought that I knew what I was doing, ...
  • Interesting thoughts. I see what you are saying, although I tend to use VR a fair amount in the right situation. But yeah, it can add blur in some situations. When taking shots of planes going by ...
  • Replied in Watch the VR?
Well, OK. It doesn't exactly spin.  But it does move things around.  And it does lurch the lens a bit when you first engage the VR motors.  Try this:  Put a VR lens on a camera on a tripod and ...
  • Sweet shots!  Especially the third, where the back seater is waving.  I so want to hit the Mach Loop some day.
  • Replied in Watch the VR?
It was mentioned, but only briefly, so far. If you lift up fully from the shutter button, the VR motor stops. If you then press down fully, the photo is taken, but the VR motor is not yet spinning ...
