About me:

My day job is a BIM Manager in the Architecture industry, and I do architectural photography on weekends for a small client list of architects and builders. When not photographing buildings, it's mostly pictures of family and my kid's sports. I don't have much free time to explore other avenues in photography, but someday I'd like to pursue landscapes.

gipper51's current gear

Panasonic Lumix DC-LX100 II
Canon EOS 5D Mark IV
Canon EOS 5DS
A lovely small camera with a big sensor and sharp, fast lens. Great body and controls. I call this the "standard zoom" in my Micro 4/3 kit
Very fine camera, and possibly the last DSLR I'll ever own. I'll be hanging onto it for a while yet.
Best bargain in FF cameras today IMHO. If you think the sensor is too noisy or lacks DR, try processing RAWs with DxO software. Was eye-opening for me.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX85 (Lumix DMC-GX80 / Lumix DMC-GX7 Mark II)
Canon EF 16-35mm F4L IS USM
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
Everything good you've heard is true. This is a benchmark UWA lens.
Still a great general purpose zoom. I get a lot of mileage from this lens.
Canon EF 35mm F2 IS USM
Canon EF 50mm F1.8 STM
Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM
Fantastic glass and I love the results from it every time. One of my least-used lenses lately because I don't like lugging it around, but when needed it always delivers.
Canon EF 70-300 F4-5.6 IS II USM
Canon EF 85mm F1.8 USM
Canon Extender EF 1.4x II
For when the light is good and I don't want to lug the 70-200 2.8. The optics are better than the price suggests, even on 50MP. The focus speed still amazes.
I don't shoot primes enough to spend the big bucks on an L version, and I still like the images it produces. Solid value. I really liked it on APS-C sensors as a poor-man's 135.
Panasonic Lumix G 25mm F1.7 ASPH
Panasonic Lumix G Vario 45-150mm F4-5.6 ASPH Mega OIS
Sigma 12-24mm F4.5-5.6 II DG HSM
My copy is very sharp at the wide end, and it only comes out when I need the 12-15mm range. The 16-35L f4 is better in the overlapping ranges. But this is still a capable lens stopped down. Anything better to cover 12-15mm is at least 3 times the price.
Sigma 56mm F1.4 DC DN | C
Venus Laowa 10mm F2 Zero-D MFT
Canon Pixma Pro-100
My fast telephoto prime on m43. A really good lens all around.
Amazingly tiny lens with fantastic optics. This mini wonder is a ton of fun to shoot with.
Other gear:
  • 430EX III-RT Love it. I use this far more than the 600 due to the compactness
  • 5 White Lightning Ultra strobes 3900 Watt seconds of power across 5 strobes. Ancient but I love em.
  • Canon 600 EXII-RT My big gun, but seldom used . Stays at home since the tiny 430EX III-RT packs better.
  • Canon T/S-E 24mm f/3.5 Lens doesn't get the respect it deserves. Quite sharp even on 45mp. Software fixes most of its CA problems.
  • Tokina 24-70 f2.8 AT-X Pro Optically a gem, and better than several models costing significantly more. Focuses only with the center cross points cluster on 5D4/5DS and even the R5 had some fits. I will eventually upgrade to the 24-70L II for AF reasons only.
