daguerre999: Have to agree with Wickblau here. I was ready to put my cash down for the M4, but not being able to focus while zooming (in CAF) is a deal breaker. I shoot wildlife, motorsports, horse racing and AFL, amoung other things. Focus while zooming is essential to maximise your chance of the "shot".
A pretty stupid omission in an "action and sports" camera.
It seems to do well enough in video mode, but if I wanted a video camera, I'd buy a video camera.
C'mon Sony. Pick it up.

at least all that sounds quite good!

Thx Horacecoker!
So incredible 24fps and very good AF but rather crippled handling (and expensive ..) .... really a pity ...

Thx for info!
So zooming-in and AF-C isn't possible at all or what?
what about zooming-in and AF-S as a possible work around??

Wickblau: ... "The lack of ability to zoom while maintaining focus, and the relatively slow zoom speed compared to a manually driven zoom lens will surely be a deal breaker for serious action shooters. And while AF is excellent, it isn't sports-camera reliable."...

I opened the review and first of all that line popped into my eye and that means that there's no need for me to read the review at all (saves my time) .... sadly disappointing ...

I am a Sony fan, but sorry Sony, for the price of a RX10 IV nowerdays I would really expect at least the above mentioned and so I'm simply and (a bit sadly) out of it - rather buy the cheaper RX10 III instead.

or other way for that money take a consumer dslr (with larger sensor) and some glass and get my birds in flight or whatever ...

Of course the comparison doesn't really make sense, I mean there are no such 24-600 lenses and so on .... but here in Austria, Europe, the Sony has a current entry price of Euro 2,000! Of course it will soon be down to € 1,800 but it will take a very long time to go down to 1,600 and that's still quite a lot of money.

If I easily had the cash on hand then ok I might buy IV but considering the money it would really make sense to reconsider precisely if a different system would be a more reasonable choice that gives you a wider range of possibilities (dlsr body, fast fixed lenses etc)

So I'd say point is the price. And for me it's just to high. If it was Euro 1,400 I would really make the effort (for me RX10 was already overpriced)

I think I understand you are saying that AF-C of IV is supposed to work fine when used in a "moderate" way, right?

Some years ago (given it up meanwhile) I usually had Canon 1series and expensive (fast) L-glass and you're right when you say that in most cases you don't need very fast AF-C combined with really quick manually zooming-in.
I usually tested my equipment on AF speed and AF accuracy in the way that I followed quick objects running towards me. (fi. bird shows or people or dogs running up to me etc) - and it is already some years that I had a Canon 7d too which was quite affordable, cost was about Euro 800 - 900.

Wickblau: I used to shoot falconer's bird shows with Canon 1 & 100-400 L IS.
400mm sometimes was a bit of too short and often I wished to have much less than 100mm. So that cam would be perfect for me.

Here I see falconer + (slow) bird and I wonder if it would be possible to show a series of birds in flight??
Question would be if the cam is quick enough to follow (is the zoom quick enough?) and keep in focus a faster bird (f.i. eagle, I wouldn't ask for a hawk) coming straight upon towards the photographer?

( .. and Bambi surely is a troll, I already noticed yesterday, just forget his posts ...)

Thanks Richard!
Doesn't matter, owls are rather slow anyway so I would trust the cam in the owl-case.

Octane: Awesome that a manufacturer spends a lot of time and effort to make an 'old' camera much better and provides it as a free upgrade via software. I hope this will set an example!

How blind some people walk through life ....,
it's rather that you get almost nothing "for free" in REAL life ..

itsastickup: Interesting. Giving functionality updates like this makes for an exciting and satisfying owner-ship experience, while at the same time Canon get to release hardware before the software is quite ready. Nice.

I'm sure that's the way it really is.
Canon certainly is not some sort of Robin Hood ..

alexdpx: To those complaining . . .

I bought my 7D with firmware 1.something, paid for it and accepted it for what it is. I thought then (and even now), that it was an awesome hardware/firmware combination. Now Canon is giving me a significant upgrade . . .FOR FREE!!!! And that's supposed to make me feel CHEATED??? I don't get it.

a) I would not call it complaining rather then pointing out ..

b) of course it's a good thing for all 7d owners, dead right, what else - or is there any need to talk about that?! ;-))

c) best for those who can now go back to bed again, ie. Canon *lol*,
everyone is happy, well done!

Yes, Canon always does great merry brainwashing .. ;-)

prove what? just as one example compare video features of the new rebel 2012 with Pana GH2 2010, should ring a bell ..

(and I do excuse and get out here)

tipid: I absolutely agree with you.
Of course canon fanboys don't want to hear that .. ;-))
But having still Canon dslr of my own shouldn't prevent my brain to make up a critical mind. Canon is a pain in the neck, I'd never had bought a 5dII which should have had proper AF right from the beginning, now it's 2012 when they first give way to that but still leg pulling concidering the 5dIII price.
Nevertheless, lots of people happy about someone telling them what to think and most important what stuff to buy .. ;-))))

Do you REALLY believe that??

normally they would never do, as long as cash cow flows they'd let hang loose if the others would let them - just have a look at their "mirrorless" ... they are just not up to what they should be

to me it seems they only managed to provide the market with 5dIII and 1dX (ok, 1dX I think is fine) and I really wonder what they will go to PK Cologne with?! (and actually I don't bother)
