theory03: Not buying an iPhone, and keeping a modest phone with a pre-paid plan, has helped me to afford 5 international trips and some lovely lenses in the past 10 years. That has done a lot for my photography skills.

A few years ago I remember reading that total cost of ownership for an iPhone (device, service contract, taxes, etc.) over two years came to about US$3,800 on all the major US carriers. While there has been more competition in recent years, and users in other countries might be getting better deals, a ten-year iPhone user has spent a considerable amount.

I stand by my original comment, and have been to Japan (4 times), Southeast Asia, and Eastern Europe in the past 10 years. I also have purchased some nice Zeiss ZM rangefinder lenses. Not all funded by not having an iPhone, but US$1,900/year certainly helped grow my dream fund.
