I believe someone said in Oner of the threads that Electronic shutter strokes do NOT count to the shutter count (i.e. it's mechanical only).  Hope this helps.

Excellent observation, thank you.   I didn't want to speed well over a grand for a flash unit.  And the cheaper options weren't particularly good imho.  It was far wiser for me to buy a used, but ...

and all because of Canon's new multi function shoe design.. As I said, my gut instinct tells me Canon did this deliberately, to coax more sales from new flash units deemed fully compatible.
