This is what I just went with. VRII prices dropped a bunch as people migrate to the new FL + the TC1.4X I and II both work well with this lens and can be also picked up cheap right now.

Yeah, the fact they know about this, still sell this lens new and don't plan on fixing this is problematic to me.

I was worried about the lack of parts and I read those early AFS lenses had issues with the AF motors failing.

That was why I sold mine, well besides the fragile shutter. The skin tones just seemed wonkey and it took a lot of work to get "normal" looking color.

I actually am not even sure about 800-750. The ONLY thing I liked or thought I would like about the D750 was the slightly smaller form factor. I actually found I like the D4 better.

Couldn't be happier! I kept my D800 for landscape uses but for everything else, the d4 rocks.

Not only is the firmware mature, most manufacturing issues have been ironed out as well as any flaws in a certain model exposed
