I’ve been shooting at -.3 to -.7 for years with my DSLRs to protect highlights, and now I’ve carried that over to the Z9. I shoot birds a lot, many which have white on them, but also have dark eyes ...

Notwithstanding the outstanding capabilities of the D6, you might also consider a Z9, especially if you want to buy a new D6. The Z9 is $1000 less than a new D6, and can be shot in silent mode.

While the price of the D850 has inched downward over the past few years, it was originally priced $1000 more than the D780’s current retail price. Note that the D780 is an upgrade to the older ...

The adult eagle shot is fabulous on several levels, especially sharpness. Looking forward to eventually getting my pre-ordered copy of this lens. Thanks for sharing.

Lots of good points. But the OP was specifically addressing enthusiast wildlife photographers that presumably can’t afford a flagship camera, and don’t need or want the size and weight.

Yes! I’m fortunate to be able to afford a Z9. But IMO, most enthusiast wildlife photographers are not. Yes. And many don’t want the size and weight of a Z9. Yes! IMO, there’s tremendous demand for ...

I doubt it's Nikon's intention. The Z9 and some marvelous new Z-mount teles clearly show Nikon is interested in the wildlife photography market. But actions speak louder than words. The flagship ...

Yes! I was spoiled by my old 500 F/4 afs-II which had near, mid and full range limit options. You may be right that Nikon chose not offer near/close range limits as a cost-saving measure, but I ...

This is what a Petal Pixel review stated about the motor in 800 PF: This lens uses an STM (stepping motor) for autofocus. It’s not the company’s latest and greatest technology, which would be the ...

Agreed! I think it’s significantly less prevalent through firmware 3.10 than from when I received the Z9 14 months ago.

I don’t think it’s a lens focusing matter. I consider it an MILC AF weakness relative to DSLRs. I shoot small birds a lot at varying distance. With the Z9, I’ve had to change my grip on my long ...
-
I wasn’t sure what you meant by having trouble focusing at short distance with this lens. Just in general, I’ve found the Z9 doesn’t auto focus well on close small isolated subjects with my long ...

I do shoot small perched birds and had ordered the 800 PF from Nikon within a minute or so after it was announced last year. However, I cancelled a week later since I already had the 500E, which ...

That logic would make the D5600 the best, no? ;-)

Thanks Peter. Should have ordered these a while back before mine fell off. 🙂

I had not heard of the problem on any widespread scale. But I actually just experienced it firsthand upon discovering it was missing! It lasted 14 months, but it started loosening at about 9 months.

Just ordered one. Yes, pricey, but hopefully it stays in place better than the OEM part.

Glad that helped! Ironically, when I saw your post, I went to check my eye cup and it was gone! 🙂 Will need to order another.

Hopefully you'll be very happy with your purchase. For an exotic prime, it's a great balance of weight, handhold-ability and sharpness. I currently use the 500E with both a D850 and Z9. Works ...

Haha! I like this trend. Maybe after a couple dozen more back and forths we’ll get you to Excellent. 😉
