I started learning about photography from my father but didn't buy a camera in anger until 1999 when, still being the age of film, I got myself a Nikon F100 in preparation for a trek across part of east Africa. I also bought a Nikon FM2n as backup and some far too unforgiving film stock. As it transpired, I just loved the FM2n and ended up using it more, even though the F100 was technically light years ahead and, frankly, exceeded my then skill level.
After dropping my camera and destroying the hobbyist-rated zoom that was attached I was forced to fall back onto the 50mm f1.4 that I had as a mid-range backup, but had virtually never used. This was a revelation: Who knew it was possible to have so much control over the bokeh or to take shots with such limited light. I returned from that trip an immeasurably more experienced photographer and traveller.
As for the Nikon FM2n, I still own it, although, of course I've long ago moved on. It is everything a camera must be to get an image and nothing else. It is the camera by which I judge all cameras.
