Weegee: Same ( or better! ) shots could have been made with a couple of portable electronic flash units ( Photix Indra 500 ).

Would you mind to explain how you would hang them 100ft up in the air?

Michael - Visual Pursuit: A simple octa with some added snake oil.
Might be fine as a regular octa (provided the craftsmanshipis okay), but it won't do what a beauty dish does.
The definition of a beauty dish is a very even light in the center, with a visible, smooth gradient fall-off to the perimeter of the light beam.
This can't be achieved with light formers where the flash tube can be seen from the perimeter, but not from the center of the light beam.
This thing will do in beauty dish pretender mode what all these snake oil derivates do: Cast a dark round shadow in the center and produce a brighter ring of light around it.

It might be a usable octa, but if they want a real beauty dish and not an imposter, they need to go back to the drawing board. In the meanwhile, the best advice is to throw away the deflector first after unpacking and for get about the thought of a beauty dish. That part is pure marketing snake oil.

The direct light from the bare flash tube is everything but soft. In a construction like this the flash tube can cast a circular bright ring of light with a dark center. It is easy to tell a construction that *might* work from a construction that won't. Look straight into it and then turn it slowly sideways. When you are able to see the flash tube with the lightformer turned sideways (shortly before you can't see the center anymore), then the construction can't work. It is not different in the Westcott Rapid box or the already existing Chimera folding dish. They all might serve well as regular softboxes, but none of them can do what a real beauty dish can do. The purpose of a beauty dish is not to knock off the center, the purpose is an even center with a significant but smooth fall-off to towards the perimeter. The exact opposite of what these things do.
