Thanks for trying Luc. Much appreciated. I'm back home now, so my time of playing in the field is over for a while. If I ever figure out what is happening, I'll update the thread.
-
Thanks, I had not considered that. I will give it a try. Paul

Given my previous thread seems to have gone off track I am starting a new one. Please note this topic is about underexposure when using the in-built intervalometer, not about how to use it. My ...
-
Nope, mechanical shutter. I didn't change anything between turning on and off the intervalometer.

The camera started a new exposure within a second or two after the previous but I noticed it was incorrectly exposing quickly so I stopped using the intervalometer quite early and switched back to ...

Thanks Andy. I agree, which is why I raised it here, although I've also learnt more about the interval. Historically, I've assumed it was the time between the end of the previous shot to the start ...

Thanks drsnoopy. That seems to be the consensus of opinion.

A couple of JPG exports. Consecutive images. Same settings. Very different exposures. I hope the exif data remains intact after the uploads.

Let me try and post 2 raw images, one taken with and one without the intervalometer to demonstrate the problem. Might be a challenge from my current location, but I'll try.

Anders, thanks you your reply which was really helpful. It has helped me understand how Canon has implemented this function. IMHO it's not a great implementation because it means that if you need ...

Definitely worth testing and I shall do so, but why would the metadata in the image have a 13s exposure?
-
No, that was turned off. I never use it. That too, however would just result in missed shots, not underexposed ones.
-
Even if you're right, it doesn't explain the results. The image was exposed for 13s but its brightness does not match that of other shots with the same settings. It's as if the shutter didn't open ...

Hi Luc, thanks for that info. I don't know why that would need to be the case. It certainly wasn't on my 5D mkiv. Why would the camera need more than a second or two to write the image to card?
-
Initially 2s and then tried at 3s.

I was out photographing the northern lights last night. Manual exposure. F4, iso3200, 13seconds. Everything was exposed perfectly. I then turned on the intervalometer to record a sequence of ...

Just focus where you think you need to and then manually twist the focus ring a little to move the focus point towards you. When you combine the images, the out of focus bits will be discarded, ...
