pacnwhobbyist: First of all I think image quality from this camera is excellent. I have analyzed and scrutinized the sample photos 6 ways from Sunday and I find very little to criticize. While not worlds apart, they are a bit better than the Sony RX100 II at closer inspection. Especially the ISO3200 shot.

However, one thing I have noticed from the pictures from this camera vs. the RX100 II...the RX100 II's photos seem to "pop" a little more than the Canon's. The color and contrast are a little more dramatic from the Sony. That might be in part due to the Zeiss lens. The Canon still has nice (and very accurate) colors and I can see how a lot of people would find that more appealing over the Sony. But, me personally, I can't help but like the look of the RX100 II's photos a little better. Maybe I might change my mind once I see more of what the G1X Mark II can do.

I agree! And RX100 is much more portable.
Maybe tweaking the settings on GX1mkII could help achive better images.

bzanchet: Seems a pretty decent camera. But I think that 100% crop images are very soft and grainy (reminded my old S100), not much detail as I hoped for a camera with this sensor. RX100 is smaller, cheaper and has better 100% crop details, and more mega pixels to crop the image.
Even with the crappy image from the studio scene from dpreview, I bought a RX100. Not one of my shots are like the studio scenes, real life pictures are much much better. I was thinking of buying a GXmkII, but now I`ve changed my mind.

I have to agree with you my friend, RX100 colors on auto mode or P mode standard are awful!
I dont shoot raw or post processing, so after some trials, I set on P mode Landscape all the time, and I got the best colors ever from all the cameras I`ve had, much richer than my old S100 and T5i, even the skin tones.
Give it a shot! Lol.

Seems like a great camera, maybe not for everyone.

I love the idea of the evf bundled. I prefer a slim camera with an optional evf, than a chuncky one with a evf built in.

I will wait for the reviews and for the price to drop, everyone knows they will eventually, I dont understand why always this whinning.

bzanchet: Dear DPReview, could you tell me if it shoots at 16:9 aspect ratio? If it does, what would the resolution be?

Dear Samuel thank you very much!! I only shoot at 16:9 to view on my monitor! The resolution will be perfect for my 4K 3840 x 2160 16:9 TV. 12MP is just enough for me!

bzanchet: Very nice... A little late to the party...
Canon will probably have the 4K video up to 2025.

I have a wonderful 4k Sony TV that I use as monitor, I have a Denon AVR-X2000 with 4K, Netflix is just about to start streaming in 4K... it is just that I am hoping for a compact 4K for the near future!
Late to the party the RX100 created 2 years ago, small, fast portable, big sensor câmera IMHO.
Canon lately has taken a lot of time to upgrade their line with major diferences or inovation as Sony.

Naveed Akhtar: finally one good camera .. from canon as well!!

I totally agree with you!! I think that the 180 tiltable lcd is much more useful than the ovf.
I am not sure if I will trade my RX100, which is much smaller...

Very nice camera indeed, although RX100 seems to be a bit sharper and less noise, even with the smaller sensor.
The article does not mention, but the GM1 probably has a lens cap. I prefer the RX100 as a real pockatable camera.

100% crop images are too noisy, too close to the new gen of smartphones cameras...

I wish Sony RX100 have the colors of this Canon! Would be great to combine the sharpness and low light ability of the RX100 with the color on the Canon S series!

Excelent work DPReview!
I am very happy to see the RX-100 II slightly better than the m4/3s up to ISO 400! The best pocketable camera ever!

No-RAW Sony cameras have much better jpegs colours than RX-100 IMO. I am amazed that I need to "fix" the images on a $650 camera...
Hope for a firmware update soon, or for the next gen of Canon and Olympus cameras with a sensor equivalent to the RX100.

Boky: something's seriously wrong with the colour.... does't look right, especially warm spectrum.

Boky

I own a RX100 and I have to tell you, the colors look the same... and that is a bad thing.
The IQ on the camera is awsome, but it is biggest problem are the colours... specially skin tones...
If you are looking to buy this camera for its jpegs you are in for a bad surprise.

Very nice! This is probably the best 1/1.7"camera available.

Too bad that everytime, the same gang enters the comment section to complaint about sensor size, the specs and so on... there are a lot of cameras to diferent tastes, for me this is perfect, if it is not for you, go nag in somewhere else...

Too bad they didnt release a firmware update... I love my RX100, but it has a much less pleasant skin tones on jpeg than my old Canon S100 and my Olympus E-PM2. It is great for landscape, not so much for people pictures.
A 180º tilting lcd would have been so great for self pics, too bad!
I wonder if the zoom while video remains so much slow...
Except for this minor glitches, it is still the best pocket camera available, but for the amateur photographer, doesnt Worth the upgrade for the RX100 II IMO.
