jwalker019: I love the retro look, but no handgrip makes it a "no" for me :/

Maybe it's just me, but I was ready to invest in Leica until I actually tried to use one and realized without a handgrip, it was like holding a $10k bar of soap ...

I am sure there will be grips, probably third-party available soon :)

Just collected mine with a bunch of free gifts! Beautiful camera, I know many people complain that it's just a Z50 in a different body! So what? It's the experience that matters to me, at least, the dials, the look is just awesome :)

Oh and I mounted a Voigtlander 35 1.2 III with a Silver Helicoid adapter to it, brought tears of joy just looking at the setup haha ;)

Carluccio: Does anyone know if the Nikon Fc can be charged while using it ? Thanks

Yes, it can use a USB-C cable with a PowerBank or a direct USB-C adapter connection :)

Pontoneer: The testers repeatedly say no eye or face detection - perhaps they didn't fully explore the menus or read page 53 of the user manual

Why the heck does Face Detection or Eye AF so important! As if photography is not possible without these two! SMH :)

Rudi Z: The kid lenses are too bad from the Z50. The other Z lenses are a joke... They are too big and even bigger than the Sony lenses... You should buy a small camera with huge lenses? For what is your camera so small? A DSLR is much lighter with lenses than a Sony or Nikon Z camera... And the Z lenses are without image stabilization and even more expensive... For what reason should the customer pay 300USD (outside of the USA) for the Z mount... when they deliver the wrong lenses for their cameras.. Nikon is punishing as usual their customer and the customer don't buy anymore Nikon!!! For the mirror-less Cameras at Amazone... Nikon is with the Z50 on place 50 and with the Z6 on place 70 for the most sold mirror-less cameras!!! Beside that, nobody likes to pay 180$ for a 32Gbyte card for the Z6 and Z7. You need 4 memory cards,.. for that you can buy a camera...

Other Z lenses are a Joke? LMAO!!!! Like others mentioned, they are class-leading in sharpness and quality! Sure the 35mm, 85mm looks ugly, lol, but the results they deliver are better than their counterpart, including Nikon F lenses :)

Henrik Herranen: Once again:
Why is sensor size not in the "Key specifications" list? You cannot expect your readers to remember these things by heart for every camera - I certainly don't.
Plus, honestly, if sensor size isn't a key specification, then what is?

Otherwise, an interesting read. Still, I don't think the "shallow DoF" argument works for MF anymore, with the sensors only slightly larger than FF, and with so many FF ultra-large aperture lenses (f/1.2 to f/1.4) available.

But the resolution on those portraits!!! _-_

Hi DPreview,

I have been a long time follower of this wonderful site, since the time of Nikon D1 days! the reviews have always been great source of info BUT!

The following has NEVER happened before, at least I have never seen it here before!

Pros: Reasonably small, light body for a DSLR at this level
Cons: Camera is bulky when compared to mirrorless rival

Why is a DSLR being compared to a Mirrorless? "Single Lens Reflex" is not Mirrorless guys, please!

First its reasonably small, light bidy for a "DSLR" at this "level" and then you guys go out of the way and totally change the "level" and compare it against a mirrorless?

One of these have to go, either the Pros or the Cons :)

peevee1: ISO 40? What kind of sensor do they use for that? Interesting choice of base ISO, probably because the lens has fixed bright aperture.

F2.0 is not so bright actually :)

doctorbza: I can't help but feel that this is completely irrelevant for 99% of still photographers. Things like a 2/3 stop noise advantage at iso 102,400? Come on.

Photography is about light, remember? Who cares how these cameras perform when there is none?

@mosc: Shooting at high iso is not the only reason why photographers use FF cameras. Cell phone cameras!? I wouldn't want to see my wedding photographer shooting the wedding with his iPhone or Lumia 1020 :D

R Thornton: Camera makers are not striving to re-invent cameras (let alone photography), they are striving to re-invent their margins. That is why they are offering ever so pricier cameras with which the only discussion really is about what they cannot do!

But should we still be calling these little guys DSLRs? :)

In reply to:

Charrick: It's patently obvious what Pentax is doing - trying desperately to stay alive.

It has gotten to the point where nearly every other camera maker can do better than Pentax in nearly every area. And Pentax knows that it won't beat them in terms of features or quality, because its rivals are just getting better, and farther ahead.

So what does it do?

Gimmick 1: Pentax makes cameras that come in a wide assortment of colors, to make up for the lack of everything else in comparison to its rivals.

Gimmick 2: Pentax makes a compact camera with a small sensor and tries to get unsuspecting victims to think that it has the quality of SLRs, and hence spend more money building up a completely superfluous lens collection. I thought this was the lowest they could go.

Desperate Survival Tactic: Pentax gets Ricoh to somehow buy them, like HP bought Palm, another dying brand.

Gimmick 3: Remove the benefits of an SLR from an SLR and make it look like a toy.

Pentax is running low on gimmicks.

Agree with ogl :)
Pentax K5 and K-r are benchmarks for low noise / detail. If you have any doubt, check the ISO test comparison right here on DPR and you will see K5 got better score compared to N and C counterparts (D7000 and 60D)!

And the limited pancake lenses are just great :)

raztec: The idiocy of Canon and Nikon shines again!!

Instead seeing what the m4/3 competition have done and being able to find just the right balance of lens and chip, they each royally screw up their new cameras.

Nikon, by making its chip way too small and reducing external controls. A slightly bigger chip, P A S M controls, and F-mount adapter would have sold me given its great auto focus.

And now Canon with a chip that's unnecessarily big and hence a lense that's unnecessarily slow and not wide enough. And no EVF and non-interchangeable lenses and crippled video functions are all huge oversights.

Why do they not realize that so many of us who are invested in their DSLR and lenses already wouldn't jump to Fuji or Panasonic if we got what we wanted from Nikon or Canon?

This marketing idiots at N and C continuously frustrate me.

100% Agree with Jon Stern :)
It drives me nuts looking at tonz of the complains about each and every camera that is announced! If nothing wrong, then there are complains about DPR and AMAZON earning $$$ from these posts... :-\

No AM/FM radio?

Yeah, keep those complaints coming...

It is a beautifully designed ergonomic camera. The functions and buttons are almost flawless.

Cannon missed the ship... they forgot to add dishwasher and a microwave in it... these days this is a norm and you cant live without :-\

On a serious note, I will buy it as soon as its out :-)
