  • If these specs are accurate then this camera is DOA at the rumored price of 3K. Sure a small handful of fanboys would buy it- but as others have already noted- it is basically an E-m1 II with a ...
  • Unfortunately, I did not have a Nikon 50mm previously. What I DID have is the Sony 55 mm 1.8 and to my eye this lens easily goes toe to toe with the Sony lens.
  • Created discussion thread Nikon 50mm 1.8s photos
I am very happy with the results I am getting with the 50mm 1.8 s lens.  Attached are shots ranging from f/2 to f/4. On full frame, even f/2 winds up delivering some very nice separation and bokeh.
  • An F4 zoom seems like a horrible lens for doing Astro regardless of coma.
  • Created discussion thread Simply a treat for studio headshots
I have now used the Z7 and Nikon 24-70 Z lens for several individual headshot sessions and one corporate shoot of thirty people. I don't go for shallow DOF in the studio, so I am typically ...
  • OK- can anyone clarify?  When shooting wider than 5.6 is the Z7 focusing at the shooting aperture, or is it stopping down to 5.6 in order to focus?   Reading through this thread I am hearing two ...
  • I'll be shooting a sweet 16 celebration tomorrow night.  I will try to use face detect as much as possible for the portraits and hopefully will be reporting back with some equally positive ...
  • I am glad to see the Z7 performed well in the concert setting.  I will be doing my own outdoor backlit testing this weekend and hope to be able to report equally positive results.  For context, my ...
  • This is spot on- The concert shots are nice- but far from great examples of shooting against harsh backlighting.   The classic examples where mirrorless can struggle is shooting against  a setting ...
  • If  Nikon is in fact detecting and focusing on the nearest eye and yet only being marketed by Nikon as face detect then Nikon is beyond stupid to not be touting their eye detect focus, ...
  • Wow.  I never had such a bad hit rate unless shooting into a strongly backlit background. I was able to crank through a couple of hundred graduation photos- two shots per student, no more than ...
  • Thank you for sharing such a nice set of images.
  • I truly love my Z7- but not even at my fanboy best can I with a straight face claim the Z7 has a better face detection algorithm than the Sony.  I was able to trust the Sony solution even for ...
  • If you are shooting in Manual Mode then the camera automatically disables "APPLY TO LIVE VIEW" whenever you mount a flash to your hotshoe and turn on the flash.  So if you are trying to get a feel ...
  • In decent light the AFC has been very confident and feels comparable to the D810 I previously shot.  In lower light the focus is completely workable but not as snappy as a DSLR that can leverage  ...
  • Created discussion thread A walk around downtown
We finally had a weekend without rain here in San Antonio, and I took this opportunity to take the Z7 downtown for some photography.  I purposely chose to be shooting in AFC with various focus ...
  • If ultimate AF performance is your key metric then I can save you some money.  The Sony has a better AF system when you compare the A7R III and Z7.  I say that as someone who shot the Sony for ...
  • Mea Culpa.  I did miss the discussion of EFCS.  Yes- for me EFCS is just obvious since I like to avoid potential shutter shock whenever possible.
  • Brutal-  If I had only read and trusted the DPREVIEW analysis of the Z7 autofocus then I would never have bought the camera.  In my own real life shooting I have been very happy with the Z7, but I ...
