Antoneeo: The Galaxy S9+ under test obviously had a defective tele camera.. no other reviewer has got such problems with the tele camera and of course everybody would return a defective phone like that instead of reviewing it considering it to be "normal". Anyway also from other comments I start to understand why DPR didn't review previous Galaxy models..

I tried one out a while back and could not find these same issues either. It's really possible their test device had some problem I think.

Bobthearch: So your $900 camera phone gives you no control of focal length. So you're going to spend $300 more for some snap-on accessory lenses?
The very definition of "Throwing good money after bad."

to be fair, most of the $900 you don't pay for the camera...

Jhaakas: How does the lens mount to the camera, it is firm and accurate? Specially at such low focal distances of around 5 mm, even a slight gap or out of alignment would affect the quality.

at least in this case the "mount" is metal, that should provide better precision and sturdiness than some of the cheap plastic stuff

Shiranai: I can't read this marketing garbage "A.I." anymore.
Since when is something an artificial intelligence just for determining with a rather stupid algorithm what photo settings are best for the scene. If that's what an A.I. is, then we gotta rename the Auto mode on every camera to A.I. mode.

Hasn't got anything to do with auto mode, that just tries to achieve an 18% gray average exposure across the frame...these new AI modes actually "see" what's in the frame and a) adjust exposure accordingly and b) can modify the raw processing in line with the image content. They are still far from perfect but it's early days. There is no doubt these functions will be very very good in the not too distant future.

Mark B UK: Do you know whether the longer lens can be used in Pro mode, i.e. with RAW? There's a bug on the Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus that prevents this...

interesting, never heard about that S9 Plus bug, maybe the secondary cam is somehow hardware-limited in terms of Raw support...no idea why that could be though...

ColnagoNico: increasing prices and lukewarm specs update...OnePlus gets less and less interesting with each new launch...

what I have listed above is not better than the best flagships, it's what the flagships currently have and OnePlus claims to be on flagship level...if you look closer though, it's clear that are components where they are saving money...so yes, you pay less, but to a degree you get what you pay for...

screen resolution, they could waterproof it (which is actually a really useful feature), and the camera specs just look quite average for a current flagship, Huawei has the triple-cam with large sensor, Samsung the variable aperture...

exposure and color etc is fine but detail is pretty terrible. I think it has some real problem with fusion artifacts. If you look at HDR scenes a lot of the finer-detail is super-mushy. That said, they tend to throw out a firmware update every other week, maybe they've fixed it since I had one ;)

Specs aren't everything, though...the S9 Plus camera is great for example, the 5T's was pretty bad...let's see what they have done on the 6.

I like them as phones but the cameras just have been up to scratch and looking at this article it won't change with this one...but we'll have to see...

would not have though I'd ever get a "real" camera again but this one is tempting.

Such a pity they don't seem to make a triple-cam Honor phone...P20 Pro camera specs for less money would have been nice :)

ColnagoNico: can't wait to have this on my phone!

let's face it, if you're not ok with your data being used in some shape or form, you can't use ANY of the services that companies like Google provide, simply because most of these services rely on at least knowing something about you...I am not willing to give that up. They can use my data no problem...what I don't want is them to ABUSE it and that's where everybody has to work on...

I am surprised they did not have a camera team before. It's not a no name brand. I wonder what other brands don't have a real camera team...

Great analysis! I just wish you'd publish this sort of stuff sooner...the S9 has been out for quite some time now...

winkalman: It would be nice to see some of the smartphone features move up-market into a device with a 1" sensor. If it was simple enough and small enough, I think there could be a nice niche for a "smart" camera with noticeably better quality and some proper zoom. It's too bad that Samsung killed off their Galaxy camera line.

those had tiny sensors
