I think an f2.8 macro in the 85mm to 100mm range is a good compromise. At portrait distances, it can be a little soft, to flatter the subject.

Faint hope pretty much sums up all sides of this argument. There’s no consensus, so DPR took no stance either.

Good point @ZZT231 It’s super annoying that phones don’t clearly state what their 1x equivalent focal length is.
-
You could do that, but the “real camera” community doesn’t think in those terms, and would probably view it as an affront to the traditional focal lengths they are already familiar with. They have...

You make good points, but regardless of how many people actually use FF, it's still the standard reference for lens equivalents. With the crop factor, it's easy to tell what a 35mm or 85mm lens...
-
Crop factor is the one number that lets you compare and judge equivalent FOV and DOF between sensor sizes & lenses. This directly impacts the final look of any image, and doesn’t change across...
-
Should’ve gone with crop multiple for sensor size naming, when you had the chance… 2.7x, 2x, 1.6x, 1.5x, 1x, 0.71x, etc :-)

Macro means never having to worry about focus distance. I wish all my lenses were macros.

Designer here… When faced with this type of scenario, there are 3 approaches you can take: 1) Come up with a clever new design that everybody likes. 2) Majority vote on past approaches. 3) A...

Might I suggest you include the diagonal as well… FF would be 43.27mm (36 x 24). That allows you to easily calculate everything from those three numbers.

When designers have no usability constraints, you get abominations like this.
