Isn't there a limiter switch on the lens? Some lenses can't be switched to only focus inside a range. That can be switched off.

I had that same lens and although it was really sharp, it was mechanically weak. I tore it completely apart when trying to take of the stuck lens cap. It came apart in two pieces.
