About me:

I've been taking pictures for 50 years. I like flowers and plants, nature, small-scale landscapes (i.e. a field rather than a huge vista). Having grown up with slide film, I'm content to use jpegs straight from the camera and only make adjustments if the horizon is sloping or if the picture needs a little crop. I always buy secondhand cameras.

  • I'd also have a 'slightly wider than normal' lens, something like a 40mm equivalent on 35 mil. I had a couple of compact film cameras years ago and their 40mm lenses were just right - it never ...
  • Replied in And about M4/3
Thanks Guy. I'm hoping to buy a M4/3 camera which will last me a few years so wouldn't go for an earlier model. Depending on how well-heeled I am at the end of October, it will be a new EP-7 or a ...
  • Replied in Screen for me.
It's good to read this account. As I mentioned above, I have always preferred to use an LCD screen and, with my impending move over to M4/3, I intended to go for either an Olympus EP-L or the new ...
  • I'm in Hornsea.
  • You might be surprised at the IQ from a Sony RX100. I have one (a mark 2) and a Nikon D5100. A month or two ago, to satisfy my curiosity, I did a comparison test using a tripod at 200 ISO and ...
  • Some very familiar places here, too. I'm a regular at Beverley market on a Saturday morning!
  • Sorry, no I didn't. The light was quite good but the boats were in shadow so I thought I'd do an HDR to bring them 'forward' a bit, then added the smallest available amount of  'paint' effect. The ...
  • I did a languages degree, so can parse with the best of them! RH
  • I've been looking at the Olympus art filters today and they look great. Your pictures are lovely - I especially like the Whitby photo.
  • Thanks for the replies. I'm encouraged that several people like the picture and that adding this style/filter is part of the creative process. I can also empathise with those who think these ...
  • Thanks! I just have this odd feeling that really, I've just improved a pleasant but unremarkable scene by applying this modification. I suppose there was the decision that the scene would benefit ...
  • Created discussion thread "Picture style"
One of the options on my Sony RX100ii, and on many other cameras, is the facility to change the look of a picture with a pre-set "style". Olympus has its "Art Filters", for example. I tend to shy ...
  • I'm an LCD convert. When I got my first digital camera, a Nikon Coolpix 775 in about 2002, I loved the little screen on the back. I've had two cameras with viewfinders since then but still prefer ...
  • Replied in Ernst Haas....
....took what has remained my favourite landscape photograph since I first saw it in the Time-Life photography books in my local library when I was about 16 (50 years ago ). I've seen it given ...
  • I bought Jay Maisel's book recently on Ken Rockwell's recommendation. He said it was easily read at one sitting but there was a great deal to learn. I go back to it regularly and there's always ...
  • I have an RX100ii and have charged it anywhere there's been a USB socket - trains, hotel rooms, a cheap power bank. Still works perfectly.
  • We'll have to agree to differ about that.
  • The replies so far all seem sensible, but you appear to be exactly the target market of the Olympus EP-L series cameras. Here is a YouTube video of a very charming photographer from Kuala Lumpur, ...
  • I like photographing flowers and plants and for those pictures, the best light is often heavily overcast. This rose from last summer is an example. No highlights from sun reflecting off the glossy ...
  • Well, I do like that 45mm f1.8 lens. And the 17mm f1.8....
