About me:

I've been taking pictures for 50 years. I like flowers and plants, nature, small-scale landscapes (i.e. a field rather than a huge vista). Having grown up with slide film, I'm content to use jpegs straight from the camera and only make adjustments if the horizon is sloping or if the picture needs a little crop. I always buy secondhand cameras.

  • Don't knock the kit for being a few years old! There's not much you can't do with that camera and two lenses, unless you want to get seriously into macro or buy a huge telephoto. That 24mp sensor ...
  • Here in England, where cameras and lenses tend to be a little more expensive than in the USA, the used photographic equipment dealer MPB has lots of examples of the D3200 and the lenses you ...
  • I think I may have been misunderstood. My original comment was that the same type of landscape pictures are published with monotonous regularity in UK photography magazines and I wondered whether ...
  • I wouldn't buy it as I can read it on the library app, but the main thing I liked it for is reading about developments in camera technology - which I can do on DPR now.
  • Yes, it is, and it isn't one of the cliché magazines I talked about.
  • Yes, I remember that well! Some quite startling pictures masqueraded under the title of "erotic portraiture". As Philip Larkin remarked once to Kingsley Amis, "I never meet girls like that."
  • Yes, I have to admit that. I've been reading photo mags occasionally for about 50 years. When I was a teenager, the Amateur Photographer was always full of stark monochrome pics of concrete ...
  • Replied in Cliché
If I may extend your analogy a little, I think that producing photograph which has already become a clichéd image is more akin to playing someone a recording of a song rather than playing the song ...
  • I lived for a long time in Northumberland and the walk along the coast to Dunstanburgh Castle was a favourite so I've no objection to seeing pictures of it but if you Google images of ...
  • I like them too, they're just overdone in the photo mags. It's though the writer/editor is saying, 'these are the pictures you should be taking'. In the AP this week, there are some lovely, ...

Membership of my local library in England allows me online  access to lots of magazines. I read three or four photographic titles each month and have been doing so for a couple of years. While ...
  • I've got a Nikon 35mm DX which I bought because I thought I ought to have one. I don't use it as often as the kit zoom but it's a good exercise to go out for the day and just take the 'standard' ...
  • I have bought used gear for most of my life. The one new camera I bought, a Fuji XF1 in 2014, failed after 6 months, went back for repair then failed again when just out of warranty (pity, as it ...
  • Replied in Fuji X100s
I had one! 2015 to 2018. Fabulous pictures, lovely to use but no zoom and, at the time, I couldn't afford more than one camera so it was replaced by the Nikon D5100. I like the Nikon very much but ...
  • No idea how that title got scrambled, sorry.
  • I've stuck to a maxim I read a long time ago: if you want to do movies, get a movie camera. Still makes sense to me, but I'm a bit set in my ways....
  • Replied in Travel Plans ~
I can't be the only European who has formed the impression that the Canadians generally do things properly! We in the UK have a low daily infection rate and daily deaths are down to around 15 but ...
  • I know I shouldn't wonder what the hell all these people with phones clamped to their ears in the street find to say, but it has puzzled me for years. I saw a guy in the supermarket once, standing ...
  • As a young man in the 1970s and early 80s, I coveted small, high quality rangefinder cameras. I always liked the idea that a photograph taken on such a camera was virtually indistinguishable from ...
  • I appreciate that you and your sister will want good quality pictures, but virtually any camera produced in the past 10 years will do a more than satisfactory job. Someone referred earlier to Ken ...
