The Nikon D40 used a combination mechanical shutter and sensor gating to achieve this. This was possible with the D40’s CCD sensor and lower pixel count(faster readout speed).

In my experience bigger sensors are larger, whereas smaller sensors are littler. I know some people will dispute this because, you know, Human nature.
