EXkurogane: If DPR is posting a rumor, it's as good as true. They probably have it in their hands.

Looks like it's just A74's feature set with an updated 60mp sensor.

that's what I thought.. methinks they have NDA on hand, but can report "rumors"

OM Systems OM-1 seems to be a more sensible choice for stills photography since it's Sony Sensor have better image quality and read rate

No mention of the black levels being "gray" instead of black.. I don't expect that Apple would provide mini led or oled level of blacks..but having a "gray" display is very disappointing considering the price..

Can it take a clear picture of the surface of the moon? Curious question.

Welsh: Some have speculated that Panasonic do not have PDAF because Big Bad Sony won’t sell them a suitably enabled sensor. And yet Panasonic states that this new sensor is not from Sony. Is the continued sub-optimal video AF, therefore, simply due to a stubborn corporate attitude? They must realise how it is hurting their sales given the fact that every serious review mentions ‘hunting’ and ‘pulsing’ in video.

@Samuel Dilworth

Sony doesn't have a 25mp MFT sensor used in GH6. And comments from Panasonic and the lack of 25mp in Sony MFT sensors portfolio, suggest that Panasonic is not using Sony Sensor in their latest camera. Sony's latest MFT sensor is a 20mp quadbayer, the IMX 472 is allegedly utilized in OM-

For reference, Sony post their sensor products in their website

Tower Semiconductors (aka Tower Jazz) had a business relationship with Panasonic, in fact Panasonic used to own shares of the company. Methinks that Panasonic choose Tower, seeing that they have always collaborated in the past and they don't need Sony's expertise.

Sensor was made by TowerJazz, and honestly, Sony latest 20mp MFT sensor pulls ahead when it comes to features and design..

peeyaj: "More Resolution"

They can't get more resolution if the sensor manufacturer (Sony Semiconductors) can't provide them one.

Additional:

Sony Semiconductors latest and greatest MFT sensor is IMX472 and is used in OM-1. Considering that the digital camera market is continually shrinking and the MFT cameras are really not that high volume, wishing OMDS and Sony for that matter to create MFT cameras with higher resolution OM-1 is a shot in the dark. Having 20mp MFT sensor for many years has its own practical ramifications and logical moves for the two companies.

dave rogers: Would someone please either confirm it has an 80mp quad-bayer sensor, or correct the caption? I'm pretty sure it's not a quad-bayer sensor. (Slide 4)

It's a quadbayer sensor.

I think we should applaud Sony Semiconductor for creating a beast of a sensor.. Here's the specs: https://www.sony-semicon.co.jp/products/common/pdf/IMX472-AAJK_Flyer.pdf

It would be really cool if they open the unbinned 80mp resolution in a future firmware update.

Sony needs to step up..eerr..step down the pricing of their higher end cameras.. Video shooters will probably choose this over A1's 6k+ pricing..

I adore Sony and Panasonic , but seeing Canon releasing the R5c at this very competitive price, I think a vast majority of pro and video shooters will choose this over A1 and S1H.

Stupid Question: AM I correct that Leica rangefinder cameras have no autofocus? So, how do they create images that on focus?

peeyaj: The true winner is Sony Semiconductors considering they both supply the A1 and Z9 sensors.. 🤫

@Mikeran

I also wanted to add that you can't just tell TSMC to build something. TSMC needs the design and blueprint of a product ie sensors and those design/blueprints has so much patents and copyrights that only a handful of companies can actually do them. Designing and manufacturing a product like a sensor is a very complicated process, that's why several camera companies just outsource them to specialist companies like Sony Semiconductors, Samsung..etc

So, R3 is just a much expensive version of Sony A9 with 2021 technology and some refinements.
