Barry Benowitz: All raw images from any camera look terrible-average when first rough into raw converter! The magic happens after you work the image file global adjustments can bring the file really close in some images. But the real magic is local adjustments especially using luminosity masks with a combination of using darks and lights separately running them through the selective color filter in PS, blurring the mask and finally touching up by hand. This in no way is the final step in producing a fine image, neither is moving sliders for a finished imager in any raw converter. Most of the time I find the trade offs gets you to the same place one just takes different routes.
My first digital camera was Canon 4 or 6 mp I can’t remember but the images using today’s tools with photoshop could most likely be stunning.

Maybe I’m just lazy, but if I have to do all that work to get a good picture, it seems like the camera needs work.

cdembrey, I’m in SoCal (Los Angeles); which do you recommend (without driving too far)?

cdembrey: *Never ever* buy from a private party!! Many cameras advertised as recent CLA have just sat in a bucket of kerosene for a week and then been adjusted by a clueless hobbyist.

Reputable dealers will sell you a CLAd film camera with a warranty. Tamarkin has a Leica R6 Black, Nr. 176xxxx, complete in box, Ex+ $450—6 month warranty.

Decide what you really want:
1. Do you just want an old camera as bling, and don't really care about the photos.
2. Do you want the best quality prints, if so, get a medium format camera. 35mm film has a lot less quality than a 8 megapixel phone.

Darkroom work is a different hobby. Are you really interested in the drudgery of developing and printing? I'm not a darkroom-rat, I'm a photographer, therefore I use a professional lab. Unlike Ansel Adams, HCB always used a pro-printer.

If you decide to buy from a private party watch out for words like *cleaning-marks (means scratched front lens).* If something is mentioned in the description, you are screwed.

I’ve bought a number of cameras from private parties, and only had issues with about two. Do your research, and you’ll be fine.

BillyBobSenna: Simple economics of supply and demand. There are many excellent photos available for free and therefore the value of photos on Shutterstock is very low. I don't believe this is Shutterstock's fault. They are a business and they are just trying to survive and make some level of profit.

Right on, myreality!

cdembrey: Worker owned companies are the best. A baker know more about baking than an MBA—although a MBA is better at screwing-over both workers and customers.

Magnum https://www.magnumphotos.com/ and VII http://viiphoto.com/ are two Worker Owned Photo Agencies. Their business plan has worked for many years. No reason that that a Stock Agency with a VERY few talented photographers couldn't work as well.

Except for one important thing—does anyone really need stock photos anymore? With the digital-democratization of photography, your clients can supply free photos. If you sell cat-food, run a contest. The 6 best cat-with-product-photos gets a months supply of your cat-food. It's cheap & easy to run a photo-contest twice a year. This can work with almost any tribe.

Right on, cd!

zakk9: This is what capitalism has become. Instead of focusing on a good, professional working relationship with contributors, you pay them as little as possible without the majority quiting, to allow more money to shareholders. It's not unique to Shutterstock and it's not unique to the photography business.

No, not capitalism, just bad business.

Right on, Drew; why not shoot the video on the two cameras? Instead of all the talking, show us some footage.

Teddy G: If not, what are they for??? And I automatically apologize.

If all the "beeps" are for what beeps usually are for... why? Can't the guy get through a few minutes without words that must be beeped? His first one makes me worry. His second beep ends his review - for me. A limited vocabulary(The reason for almost all beeped words.) goes along with a limited mind... I'll get my reviews elsewhere.

Well said.

Leonp: Why is it that in many video's the only thing you see for most of the time is a guy or girl talking? That's not interesting (unless she's interesting :-) ). Don't those videomakers know that you actually can make a video where you see something interesting and you hear the guy or girl taling about it?

Right on cd!
