I hesitate to offer additional thoughts, but here is another. Why not take your lens and any other that you can, mount it on a tripod and take photos of a stationary car on the street at distances ...

The current Nikon 600 mm has a minimum focus distance of 4.4 meters.

I do not think that the 5m minimum focus distance is unusual for this type of lens. That would give a reproduction ratio of about .2 to 1. This is in the neighborhood for similar current lenses.

I have seen a number threads on DPreview featuring motorcycle and auto racing.. Looking at some of them might be helpful

I forgot to mention shutter speed. All of the photos except 1 were at 1/1000, the other at 1/800. The sharp photo was of a car in a turn where its speed is likely lower than the cars coming down ...

Let's talk about environmental conditions and distance to subject. The first shot at 300 mm definitely appears to have the subject closer than the 500 to 600mm shots. The longer shots appear to ...

It has been said many times, I wish that Nikon would just outfit its tripod feet with the Acra form. Solutions like the quick release would no longer be needed. We would have less components on ...

During the life of this thread, I purchased the lens, tuned it to the camera, purchased and installed the Hejnar foot and started using the lens for real. I am looking forward to many exciting ...

The serial number of my lens is 221163, purchased last Friday. I have ow gotten it out, checked out and beginning to use. The weight and size are a real breakthru for hiking. Great image ...

I appreciate this thread. I just purchased the lens, not even out of the box. After reading all of these posts, I ordered the Hejnar foot. Murphy lives in my neighborhood.

As a D800 owner, I doubt that it will focus with any reliability at F8. To evaluate the subject size difference of various focal lengths, you can use photoshop or even a paper print to layout ...

I have the 800 f5.6. I can assure you that it is anything but portable and too massive to respond to small birds BIF. It does have an important place for larger birds and places where I can find ...

I have been trying to get this software up and running for about two weeks. First, it would not download. Now I cannot get the installed software to run since I cannot get the license key(have ...

I have the 200 to 400 VR2. It is a great lens. Comparatively, its greatest strength for me is its close focusing and close image size, even with a 1.4 TC. Think hummingbirds. I also have the ...

Thank you for the feedback. It gives me more confidence to move ahead. I think that I will acquire the 500 PF first and a Z7ii after that. I have held that combo in the store. It will make ...

Nice photos, both on DPR and smugmug. I take similar photos with a D810 and 800mm lens, which works well. However, I am thinking of adding a Z7 and 500 PF. I have been holding back to be ...

I have the 800 plus TC. if someone in the Seattle area wants to run a test, let me know. I am perpetually thinking about getting a Z7.

If battery driven light is needed, I use flash on camera with a simple bounce diffuser attached to the flash. Simple, but effective. Can be a bit awkward, especially for verticals.

I have lens serial number 858711. Several years ago I ran into this warning with a film camera. I took it to a repair shop familiar with the lens. They milled the black outer ring at the lens ...

My memory of some aspects of film days are a bit dim. However, I seem to recall that split prisms worked only up to about 200 or 300 mm, and there limits imposed by lens aperture.
Activity older than 12 months is not displayed.
