On article Nikon announces development of flagship D5 DSLR (441 comments in total)

Nikon Motion youtube channel has a promotional video for the D5. This camera HAS to be better than the sample video shown here. I mean, it just has to.

Riebs: I'm enthusiast, not a professional. I'm also "old" approaching 70. In 1985 I was the only one in my group of friends or relatives who owned a complicated DSLR: a Nikon f2. Everyone else owned an Instamatic.

Why would anyone, especially camera manufacturers, think that interest has changed. Cell phones are simply today's Instamatics. The vast majority of picture takers couldn't care less about owning a camera, much less one that took more space than an Instamatic.

Someone (read camera manufactures) believe that just because there are a huge number of images flooding the world that there must be a huge number of individuals interested in using cameras. As a result more cameras are flooding the market, but there is no demand for that volume. No more now than there was 30 years ago.

Cell phones aren't the death of this tool. Camera manufactures mistaking demand are the culprits of their own demise.

You nailed it, Rebs.

dmsone3: I just wanted to add, it seems the young folks out there are brainwashed with Instagram, why would anyone upload a decent picture to Instagram only to have the quality of the photo ruined by all those lousy effects they offer?

While you are learning to improve your photography expertise you might also want to get acquainted with the phrase "exception to the rule".

This is a generation for whom "good enough" is good enough. Witness mp3 quality sound, movies on 10" tablets or phones. They don't care about quality so much.

I personally have never enjoyed doing things the "easy way". I learned to play guitar decades ago and cringe at "guitar players" whose only skill is playing Guitar Hero. I would never "create music" on a computer. Ergo, I wouldn't consider myself a photographer if I used a tool that does everything for me except snap the picture.

But people like me are dying out. So, long story short, I have no answer to the modern camera maker's dilemma other than making a Nikon smartphone.
