I believe it works the opposite way, with Esim off the screen will remain bright enough to see the photo you are taking.

Wrench tab, #3, Screen/viewfinder display. Make sure it is not set to "screen".

So why are you taking photos at arms length using the rear lcd screen, just use the viewfinder. This makes no sense at all...
