On article Sony a7R IV review (1505 comments in total)

A truly exciting camera just the pixel shift seems not to work properly. The pixel shifted images look extremely soft compared to Pentax K-1/II. Could you post the 4-image version of pixel shift possibly? Other reviews stated that the 16 image pixel shift does not increase sharpness ,quite the contrary, just produce a much larger file.

mosc: The Sony 85mm f1.4 on the A7R4 sure seems soft compared to the 90mm f2 Leica with the S1R. How many FF lenses can produce 160+mp of resolution!?

Maybe there is some reason for the Leica lens to cost twice as much? I wouldn't have said that before this, especially with the slower aperture but damn. The Summicron (who comes up with these ridiculous Leica names anyway) shows resolution out-classing the GFX100 where the Sony cannot.

Having a couple of years experience with pixel shift on a Pentax I can tell you that there are other benefits than just sharpness: shot noise is much much lower to a point where I don't need to apply any noise reduction in even an underexposed low-light exposure. Contrast is much better than without pixel shift. Black and white conversions from pixel shift RAWs are much more dynamic since you get a true color readout from the sensor. Shadow recovery is vastly better than in regular photos as well.

@dpthoughts
Looking at your comment history I am just really really happy for you that this Pentax announcement fills your life with some purpose! 15 comments and counting! Keep the wisdom coming, son!

RonHendriks: This early announcement will go the same as with the K-1 announcement, 14 months before release. People will be excited, but will stop buying Pentax camera's because they will just wait for that new model. Sales plunge over the coming 12 months. The Japanese dslr sales have been minimised over the past 5 years, so wait and see if there is still a market left for this new model.

@RonHendriks
I hate to agree with you there, Ron! I don't want to wait another year for or longer for a new FF Pentax! The K-1II was not worth upgrading to and my K-1 is getting old.

GoldMark: I think the big advantage of 150 Mpix is, that you will have huge reserves to zoom into the image to get parts of it cropped

@IdM photography
...or if you later realize that a crop would yield a much better photo...or maybe that a 4:5 aspect ratio is much better...or there was something in the frame that you don't want to be there...or you couldn't get close enough to only capture the intended subject...

To me one of the fascinations of photography is just that: bokeh. The human eye simply can't see like that as we constantly focus our vision. The painterly quality of it is something to behold and this lens definitely whips up some premium optical cream!

"Ah, lifestyle photography - the avid, influencing Instagrammer's bread and butter. For taking polished photographs of people doing things, like reading what looks to be an empty diary next to a porcelain ocelot, the Lumix S1R is a worthy and full-featured option."

Ahahahaaaaaa!! Thanks for that!!

Roadrunnerdeluxe: I got a question to any current Sony users: Say I want to keep my focus on maybe certain detail of a classic car, like e.g. the rear light and move around to recompose the shot. Does the camera stick to that focus point while I move?

thanks!

That is pretty amazing stuff! thank you for all the responses!

StoneJack: Sony's panic decisions releasing an outdated model with meh features..

@StoneJack
Brassaï's camera had features from the 1940's. I don't know of any photographer who became good or famous from having the latest features.

"Sony World Photo Awards 2020 presented to StoneJack for having the latest camera features!" Not gonna happen, son, so get over it!

imihaeli: I am taking the giant leap from DSLR to Mirrorless full frame, and was waiting for something big. I checked the Nikon Z's and compared them to the Sony 7 R 3, and 7 3, and others. Now that Sony introduced the 7 R IV, I will make the jump as my first mirrorless.

Yes, I read about complains what Sony should have done. But, there is no perfect camera, and that's why there is always the "next version," and improvements.

Great job Sony.

I agree! I was seriously considering the Fujifilm GFX 100 but this a perfect alternative with lots of pros!

Who knew that besides providing unparalleled resolution 61MP can draw out record numbers of Nikon trolls?

Fascinating!

Probably lots of them have multiple accounts here. #sad

I'm sure I am even more underwhelmed by your trollistic tendencies than you are claiming to be by this camera. #getalife

I mean...if the REAL Jimi Hendrix would have been involved in the design of this camera that would be a different story. This is a tad too novelty-ish for Leica, I hate to opine/admit.

Hasn't there been mention of a super-high res mode somewhere, akin to Pixelshift in Pentax and Sony cameras? If so, those images would most likely blow anything else out of the water.
Or into the water. Depending on the respective weather proofing.
