Graham's videos are very good but I can't help but think re:FZ80 that he is acknowledging the FZ80 is not good for the average shooter who wants to pick it and shoot expecting decent results. But ...

Also USB charging, improved grip, different buttons/placement and refined menu system in the M2.
-
To my eyes if you look at these comparisons the FZ80 is sharper ..look at the lettering on the cameras. Either the lens is sharper on the FZ80 or the default processing on the SX70 is stronger but ...
-
Being both cameras use a small sensor and the SX70 adds to the issue by being 20.3MP (vs 18.1) ..the results when comparing them are going to come down to processing and lens quality ..but the ...

There is no "blanket" answer to your question. This will depend on the background and especially the lighting. First you will need decent to very decent lighting in the shot to get the shutter ...

The M2 has a touchscreen and a couple other changes ...and IQ is very close if not the same as orig 1000 due to lens carry over and only minor processing changes.
-
I guess I am wondering if your preferred settings include contrast or saturation adjustment(?) ..I do like the shot ..just curious.

Some will say the results and compromises of these ultra long zoom cameras (which only really do decent in good to very good light) make them not as much of a value for the money. Sony also has ...

Yes that is a nice upgrade compared to the 200 ..and it is close the 1000s. The FZ80s AF speed seems even quicker. Accuracy along with speed is what counts and these cameras due fairly well on ...

I would agree. I think shooting in 20MP and pushing to 800mm gives about the best you can comfortably push out of the 1000 ..if shooting jpg of course.(yes 10MP setting out to 1120mm is too far ...

(I will give my perspective having owned both the FZ300, 1000(and 80) at the same time and recently going to just the FZ300 ..I have no experience with the Sony camera.) For a fairly light weight ...
-
I had both the 300 and 1000 ..plus the 80. (Sold the 80 due to it being pretty much a "very good light only" camera and build quality issues ...also button lettering already wearing off with less ...

I am considering one of these cameras for birding. Can someone tell me the zoom steps, f/stop ratios. At what optical zoom does it go above say f/5-5.6. --thanks

I wonder what this camera with 12MP woulda done. (I shot this in 8MP mode with some addtl "iZoom")

jpg OOC no PP ..before I decided to sell it. I found it had to be just the right conditions and it was one of the hardest cams I ever had to pull decent pics from ..but I have a few that surprised me.
-
I can respect that ..and I agree the FZ300 certainly does surprisingly well for a smaller sensor ..and pixel peepers certainly seem to be prevalent here but ultimately (while a decent cam rig ...
-
Ya shooting RAW+jpg here and PP later woulda been better for sure ..I think I did have the in-cam NR set to -1 but -3 to -5 would preserved detail a bit more although not as good as working with ...
