On article Shooting Kīlauea Volcano, Part 4: From a helicopter (30 comments in total)

onda: Very cool photos. Problem for me is that the helicopters ruin the experience for on the ground visitors at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, as well as the surrounding communities --- buzz all day every day, even in the most remote areas of the backcountry. The Park Service has for years tried to have them not fly directly over sacred sites or wilderness areas where people are trying to experience nature, to little avail. The safety record of the helicopter tourist industry in Hawaii is also horrendous and these companies have fought common sense safety measures. It's a cool experience, but I couldn't do it knowing how impactful it is to the locals and the sacred sites. Most people don't know these things when they go though, and by all accounts it is amazing.

I did a similar flight a few days ago. We flew over hot lava very close with doors off. This was a very remote area. No way to hike there. Absolutely no one there but our helicopter. There was no one to disturb.

Helicopters are not permitted to make this type of flight in the park.

I bought the new Mac Pro 15 inch on the first day it came out. It worked beautifully until I downloaded Photoshop CC. Then the computer froze up and Photoshop would not work at all. After two days of frustration and no solutions from Apple support (phone and the Genius Bar), I took it back for a refund. Wonder if the update means it works ok now on the new Mac Pro.

On article Seattle showcases its 'pictures of the year' (30 comments in total)

This is really strange story. Yes, the Seattle PI may have been the first newspaper to go all internet. Sadly, it has very little substance. Mostly it is a bunch of trashy stories picked up from trashy news services and totally irrelevant to the people of Seattle. It is a sad example of what is happening to newspaper journalism in this country. Good luck to the two photographers trying to survive in this sad outfit. They are just about the only substance to the PI.

From Andy Rouse web page.

Pointless Comparison

This is a plea to the lens geeks. Please do not start comparing the Canon lens with the Nikon one, it is pointless. The Nikon 200-400 does a great job for Nikon photographers and the Canon lens will do a great job for Canon photographers. Comparing the two is just pointless, as no one is going to change camera system to use this lens are they? No they are not, so please don’t fuel the silly Canon vs Nikon debate anymore, it’s not what this lens or this review is all about.

semorg: The case for this lens is sold separately for additional $650, BTW!

I never use my cases for my two 500mm lenses because of the weight issue for travel. So nice that they made it an option.

On article User Review: Gura Gear Kiboko 30L Backpack (113 comments in total)

I like my 30L and my 22L for foreign travel. They are a little smaller and lighter than many other bags yet hold a good amount of equipment.

See if you can sign up for the Gura Gear web site as they sometimes send out $50 discounts.

They are incredible in backing up their bags. I bought the 22L early last fall. Then in March I got an email that they had discovered a "defect" that I had never encountered and they sent me a completely new bag paying postage for the new bag and the return of my old bag. Indeed, they sent the new bag by 2 day delivery.

It was disappointing to find out that the recommended camera pack, Lowe-Pro AWII is not available anymore.
