FWIW, it happened to me also. One day I was grabbing the body so tight, my finger on my left hand was hitting the lens release button, and as I was zooming, slightly upset the lens lock.

How about before you close your photo, you close photoshop instead. It will then ask if you want to save any open files. Go from there.

I tried that, but was not getting the full natural colors of the fireworks showing thru. Perhaps I did something wrong?

Here are 2 photos that have been blended in Photoshop CC, taken with a Nikon D500 w/Nikon 70~200 lens on a tripod. Each shot is 10 or 11 photos stacked. Taken from my back yard.
