About me:

Equipment:
Two eyeballs (blue, sometimes need a little USM).

Canon 5d (image quality makes me forgive near-Kafkaesque ergos)
Canon 24-70 2.8 (almost too big and heavy, but super sharp)
Canon 35mm 1.4L (very nice, but 24-70 nearly as good)
Canon 50mm 1.8 MKII
Fotodiox pro Nikon --> EOS adapter (fun to use, but not for fast shots)
Canon 430EX flash
Minolta Autometer IIIf

THE BEST 35MM FILM CAMERAS EVER:
Nikon FM2 chrome (just enough dings that I'm fearless with it)
Nikon FM chrome and beautifully mint
Nikon FM black and beat up bad, but still working fine
Nikon 24mm 2.8 (pre AI)
Nikon 28mm 2.8AIS (focuses down to 3'!)
Nikon 35mm 2.0AIS (my old friend)
Nikon 45mm 2.8p (silver version, looks cool on chrome bodies)
Nikon 50mm 1.4 AI
Nikon 105mm 2.5 (pre AI)
Nikon 135mm 2.8 AIS
Nikon 20mm 2.8 AF (bought used for $200)
Tamron 80-210 3.8/4 adaptall mount (don't laugh, surprisingly not bad, only worth about $30 used, so I just keep it as a lightweight telezoom)

SMALLCAMS:
Oly 3030
Fuji F30
Olympus XA
Olympus XA4 (28mm lens)

MEDIUM FORMAT TRI-X EATERS:
Minolta Autocord (charming, but not for action)
Fuji GW690II (who knew a 6x9 could be lighter than a Nikon F5?)
Super Ricohflex 2 1/4 TLR (vintage 1950s)
Voitgtlander Vito (my father's old camera)
Zeiss Ikonta folding 6x9 camera (my late grandfather's camera)

DARKROOM
Beseler 23cII XL
Various enlarging lenses 50mm to 150mm and in between
Saunders 11x14 easel
Loads of Ilford paper

EQUIPMENT PREVIOUSLY OWNED
Sigma 30mm 1.4
* my favorite lens on DX. If you have a Nikon DSLR, failure to own this lens should be a photographic crime
Sigma 10-20mm 4/5.6
* Stunningly sharp 12-20mm, nice colors, funhouse mirror distortion 10-12mm
Nikon 80-200 2.8 push/pull AF oldie
* Very sharp, surprisingly decent focus speed, huge, too big to handhold below 1/250 sec
Nikon 85mm 1.8 AFD (if you take portraits, this is a must. makes me wonder how the 1.4 version could be any better)
Nikon 24 2.8 AFD (Acceptable, but I expected better in a prime)
Nikon 50mm 1.8 AFD (plastic fantastic! so light it's like not having a lens on the camera at all)
Nikon D100 (a very nice camera, but I always wished for a better viewfinder)
Nikon 24-85 AFS (sharp stopped down at F8, soft more open than that. Would have liked my D100 more if this hadn't been my only lens for the first year)
Nikon 70-210 f4/5.6 nonD (this lens was soft, but compact -- I fail to see the reason why it is a cult lens)

EQUIPMENT COVETED:
Canon 135mm F2L
Canon 85mm 1.8
Canon 17-40L
Sigma 12-24
Sigma 150mm 2.8 macro
Canon remote flash trigger

Phil Flash's recent activity

  • I love true pancakes (I had the 45mm 2.8P and the Voigtlander 40mm F2 for F mount), so it's definitely something I want but I'm waiting for reviews and a price drop of $50-$100. I already have the ...
