Bob Janes: Konishi Honten were making photographic materials back in the 19th century and were producing roll film only slightly after Kodak. As the linked article makes clear, they were around long before the 60s...

Their first film was made in 1929, Sakura roll, they made Japans first color film in 1940 as per some sources:

On article Sony introduces compact FE 14mm F1.8 GM ultra-wide lens (211 comments in total)

geekyrocketguy: Very interesting. Lenstip reports quite bad coma and corner sharpness that is well below their "decency" threshold. On the other hand, the f/1.8 samples in the DPR gallery look quite good. It will be interesting to see more reviews of this lens. Perhaps it has a lot of sample variance.

As an astro-landscape photographer and former owner of the enormous Sigma 14 1.8, I am very interested in this lens, but only if its coma and corner sharpness are outstanding.

Very few people seem aware of that, at cca. 1m distance the chart would have to be cca 4m wide, i wonder how many test sites has such large charts, At 3m....forget about it. Even a 28mm lens used at more common distances it s probably very difficult to test.

ChelseaPhotographer: The usual "these are meh photos", "how on earth did that photo win?" and "my photos are so much better"

Has it ever occurred to the people making these comments that maybe these are actually great photos and what is lacking is their own ability to see?

If Eggleston's Tricycle were in this shortlist how many people here would be mocking it with "I wouldn't have uploaded (it) to a DPReview Challenge, let alone a photographic competition..."

I am surprised that someone else knows Egglestone here on DPR :) What s next Saul Leiter?

Dave Oddie: To compare this to the A7II is wrong.

The list price of the A7 III (that is A7 three not A7 two) with 28-70 kit lens in the UK is £1899. The Nikon with the 24-50 is advertised as £1749. Sony have a promotion on at the moment giving £200 off that price so you's actually pay £1699.

The A7II with 28-70 is £1199 (no promotion price available so that is the full current list price). That is £550 cheaper! It's not remotely close and I doubt the Z5 is going to see a £550 price drop anytime soon.

Not to mention you can get a used a7ii much, much cheaper.

All respect to anyone who has the will and guts to do such a project. even more so when considering the disaster the previous attempt was, but....
It s a contradiction of all these reissues, you create a copy of the original, a lens that has a peculiar rendering, yet you improve, thus change some aspects of that rendering, and yes flare is part of that vintage rendering.
Mechanically the new lens will be better, but there s nothing really wrong with the original Trioplan, if the focusing is stiff it s very easy to service. Btw, you can get 3 original copies for that price.

I ll add that i don t remember seeing the "rainbow" outlining on the bubbles in my copy, it s more visible on the second sample.

Tomasg71: Not bad at all. :) Looks i need to play the lottery.

There where some 135 f1.5 lenses in the past (Vivitar, Soligor made), maybe you can get one of these somewhere and compare them, it should be easy since you use an a7 body.

Yes, no doubt that the Mitakon would be the better lens in comparison, it looks to be very good for what it is!
