Yeah, for you though it is 900mm on your d500, so 640mm eq. on my 7dii is probably still too short....

Well, then a f6.3 or f8 lens can be beneficial in good light? To get most if the bird in focus.

Because at long focal lengths the subject is 'compressed'. This may sound silly, but why? What do you mean by "enough"? Enough background seperation? Or as much in focus as possible to ensure you ...
