Searching: I know its a 14 but distortion seems high.
@MacksCameraEye
Perspective? Hehe. So my 0.2% distortion are perspective. That is ALT of distortion, download the image and look for yourself. The image are like the earth, round 😂😂 much have you been paid for these ignorant comments?
You should do some research then, and test it yourself before calling it "perspective" and not distortion 😊 try Lr and see.
lightandaprayer: What did you expect for only $1600? It's half the cost of the Canon, so you only get acceptable optical performance on half of the zoom range. . .
@Marksphoto
Me too, maybe because they haven't tried it..
I've tested sigma 12-24mm art on everything, close range, all focal length, flare, night, day, dark, every single photo are sharp from edge to edge, I never use autofocus.
When I take landscape photos I always "zoom" in by the camera zoom thingy, and then I focus so I get the sharpest photos. There are almost NO distortion, vignetting or out of focus on my photos, with the right settings and focus.
I can only say I'm more excited by the Sigma than the Canon. If people can't take sharp images then they need to focus on the settings 😂😂

Very high! Sigma 12-24mm F4 DG HSM Art are amazing at that part, also on the others, like vignetting, flare, ect.
mr.izo: and question of the day is: does it work with dc-11 on sony a7R cameras..
You must be better on searching google my friend :)
On Sony A7r I/II . you can use Sigma’s MC-11, but the AF was inconsistent when using the MC-11, and its best to use manual focus(/like everyone should do) :P

Oh i don't have the comparison images from the canon one, i can't bother keeping images of a lens i will never use or buy ;)
Well, i do own the art lens though ;)
If the canon was "sooo much better", i would have bought it, but the ART was way sharper, less distortion, less flare, less vignetting and so good holding. :D
Miike Dougherty: "Being that the Sigma isn't fully weather sealed" This is true but due to the large unprotected front element, I don't think I'll be using mine in the rain anytime soon. The same goes for any extreme wide angle lens that doesn't have a filter thread.
I think this lens handles rain quite good.
Only problem i can see are the camera, not weathersealed :P
abi170845: The Canon still rules, second to none.
I have to disagree with you on that :)
Images by sigma was so much better than the canon. So i bought Sigma 12-24 ART ;) It is amazing!
Gionni Dorelli: A part for distortion and a bit for vignetting, it does not seem to be much better than the regular non Art 12-24mm. Sharpness is a tad better, but in real life may no matter.
Or am I wrong....?
You are wrong, not that is a bad thing :)

I never had sharper images, at any focal length or F/.

Who shoot in a storm, with no protection anyways?
zodiacfml: I don't understand the negative tone of the review. It is 95% of the performance of the Canon for half the price. The build quality is also around 85% of the Canon.
They just can't beat the Canon now though because they couldn't make the lens any bigger. The ART line was successful because they were significantly larger and heavier than the Canon/Nikon equivalent where size/weight is a factor in lens design.
@AbrasiveReducer
Hmm, i own this lens and i can say that this is sharp on ANY focal lengths!
I've tested it under: Night, Sunrise, Day, Sunset - if every settings are 100% and the focus are 100%, i can't seem to agree with your statement!
MattiD80: Now wait a second. Lenstip.com conclusion is mostly positive. 12mm performance is great (BETTER then canon, the slight center diff is barely worth a difference, but corners of sigma better). There is a drop in sharpness at24, but so has the (very well reviewed) Nikkor 14-24mm. And the drop seems less severe... So again the 'negativity', seems out of place for Sigma, me thinks.
But then the true negative word pops out Spherical abberation. As in, in an easier wording, Focus shift (sadly not used by dpreview). So I research this beast and how it affects existing lenses. Conclusion? The almost unanymous good reviewed 14-24mm nikkor ALSO has it... Is this sigma this bad then? I dunno. Though if Spherrical abberation is a desivie factor, then the Tamron 15-30mm VC seems the best option for Nikon now. I must admit, that my Nikkor 14-24mm sometimes has spots that are out of focus that should be in focus. Perhaps Focus shift, i will look into it. Tamron is getting tempting apart for no 12 mm
@tonywong - I don't see any of these statements on my images. I also read this, but, i thought, what the hell! And, i was right that this lens are just AMAZING, Sharp to the edges all the way! :
sdgreen: I notice the steep drop in resolution across mid frame @f8 @16mm. Zooming in It then evens out, even increasing slightly in peripheral sharpness up to 24mm. The change in the mid frame slope is particularly noticeable
I'm a bit puzzled by this. Isn't that unusual for a lens to have a drop in sharpness mid zoom?
I'm particularly interested in f8 as it's for landscape use.
I'mkeen to see another technical review that would confirm this.
I can't seem to "find this problem" with my images though.. So yes, this is strange "conformation"..
I've taken so many images at F7-F9 and with 12mm -> 24mm, the images are sharper than the canon though(as i tested it) - i own 12-24mm ART.
7gismo: But here's the deal: once the lens landed on a tripod and used in live view mode exclusively - which I do anyway if planning to take as perfect shot as possible - finally corner to corner sharpness occurs as hoped for, pretty much comparable (perhaps tad less sharper) to Tammy, even at 100% magnification.
Please remember, as a Nikon shooter there's no way for me to compare it to Canon 11-24mm, obviously:}.
My conclusion is, this lens should perform very well for landscape tripod users at sweet spot apertures used. But beware of hand held action, if focused at aperture prevails. For possibly full image sharpness contrast autofocus of Live View screen is much recommended!
Just my 2 cents...
Indeed! But, I've used this "handheld" too, and i can't seem to see any difference between handheld and tripod landscape photos.. Every image are sharp to edge to edge, and i can't find any "out of focus" images when my settings are on point or my focus are on point, I never use AF!
GrahamHO: Your review states that when used on an APSC camera the focal length of the Sigma 12 / 24 f4 lens is equivalent to 19 / 38 on full frame and the aperture becomes equivalent to f6.4. In fact the size of the aperture does NOT change and stays at f4 regardless of the sensor size. This is fairly basic and causes your review to lack accuracy
I have Canon 70D - F4 all the way! These reviews are made when the first lens, ever has been produced..
lightandaprayer: What did you expect for only $1600? It's half the cost of the Canon, so you only get acceptable optical performance on half of the zoom range. . .
I got sharper, well better images with ART than canon.. ;)
BasilG: Thanks for the review. Was seriously considering this lens, but am now somewhat less enthusiastic (also the complete lack of forum chatter suggests it's not all the rage).
Regarding focus shift - in which way does stopped down focus deviate from wide open focus? From the samples it seems like focus shifts towards the camera when stopping down (and a lot). So would it be possible to just focus to close to infinity manually and stop down to get decent sharpness (for most landscapes unless you have seriously close foreground elements)?
I got more sharper images than this!
This is sharp from edge to edge!! I know, i have it, and i've tested almost all wideangle lenses on the same price level, and this ART are so amazing!
mr.izo: and question of the day is: does it work with dc-11 on sony a7R cameras..
Get a sony mount ;)
Derek Midgley: See no point in getting any wide angle lens that doesn't cater for the easy use of filters for landscape images...
If you need filter, find something else to take photos of ;)
NiSi has btw. But, who needs filter anyways ;)
rgs_45: The samples are good to great. It will be a great landscape lens. The distortions can be corrected through PP.
What camera body was used with this lens? How is the focus compared similar FL from the CaniKons and Sonys?
How is the Sigma 12-24 Art at 14mm compared to this?
Price??
I got the 12-24mm art right after it arrived in "Norway", and im amazed! There are only 1 con i can say, and that is the weight, the distortion are so minimal i can't notice it, !
But i noticied this on 14mm art: http://prntscr.com/eegea1
I'm not a "people" photograph guy, but does that seem "6 of 6" on distortion.
