StephanBG: Now that everyone is a photographer, everyone fakes reality.

@mike emerson - ...and none of the film "greats" ever manipulated images? Seriously?

On photo Yellow-rumped Warbler in the A Big Year - birds challenge (1 comment in total)

This is actually a Palm Warbler. Regardless, nice photo! Not sure how it placed 56th. I am often baffled at the standings of the challenges I enter. I find that many of the photos that finish ahead of mine aren't very good, but that several of the ones that finish below mine are better than mine. I just can't figure it out. I realize that each person has a different perspective...I just don't seem to ever agree with the masses. Sorry for the long-winded diatribe in your comments. I guess I'm just trying to say that I think your photo should have placed well above where it did. The composition is great, the colours are great and the image is nice and sharp.

See, now this shot proves that it IS possible to take a photo of mundane birds and make a really good piece of art. Nice composition and depth of field. People should learn from your example that stereotypical birds don't have to mean bad photos.

On photo Colourful... in the A Big Year - birds challenge (2 comments in total)

The colour and contrast are really great, but what really makes this image great in my mind is the small winding vine along the branch. Nice job on capturing a great pic!

Love the empty space. Too bad you didn't also capture the reflection.

Love the composition and contrasting colours. Unfortunately, the very heavy handed noise reduction detracts very significantly from the image.

Very apt description. I like the simplicity, the subject isolation and the colour contrast. Nice job.

On article Depth of Field in Macro Photography (158 comments in total)

I've been an aspiring macro photographer for years, and have dabbled in the technique. Although I've got a handle on the basics, it's great to read a detailed explanation, and learn of techniques new to me (i.e. photo-stacking). Thanks for the article, I eagerly await the stacking article.
