This kind of images are pretty common for me too. I find that the Oly focus just tends to jump around all over the place...once it focuses slightly front, then back....sometimes it nails it ...

It was 7 meters. Sorry, i delete RAW-s after developing JPG. For medium to long distances i find the biggest problem is little misfocus but when it nails focus it is pretty sharp: 45 meters away: 1 ...

Well maybe you used wrong settings. I would say with right settings topaz denoise gives almost same results as DXO. I once posted a comparison here too.

Yesterday i took this shot in direct sunlight and i was amazed again how sharp my 100-400 is: Zero sharpening added and very little processing done, cropped. Yours looks strange indeed. Oh...and i ...

You can push almost OK picture from backlit scenario (orf to dng with deep prime + ps edit) :) sooc jpg processed

Before rushing to buy PL 100-400 i would check out this detailed comparison too: https://mirrorlesscomparison.com/micro-four-thirds-lenses/olympus-100-400mm-vs-panasonic-100-400mm/#quality

Oh....i must check if i can tune it from setting. Thanks. edit: Thanks....this live view boost setting for M mode was wrong...now it works, it shows compensation. Well looks like i can use M mode ...

Well...too bad if the lens is plenty sharp wide open. Thanks. Now i know it is OK.

I am using M mostly to overcome this issue, but it would be nice if S mode would keep the lens wide open as far as it is possible, not raise the ISO

100-400 oly as i remember it was the same story with 75-300 II

Maybe the example was not very good indeed, but the point remains. Tried to lower highlights before export to DNG of another image and it worked better.

Thanks. Tried dxo PL and i can get a lot more out from highlights and shadows, so looks like pictures taken in harsh light should be processed in Photolab first.
-
Thanks...that sounds pretty logic !

I have noticed it before. When i open orf in adobe camera raw i can get more details back from highlights compared to the converted and denoised image (dng, dxo pure raw). Those are edited with ...
