About me:

Aussie in exile. Since the 'sixties I have used almost all formats from Rolleiflex 6 x 6 cm to Minox 8 x 11 mm. I Love taking photos and playing with cameras but hate carrying camera bags.

I first went digital in 2002 with the Canon Powershot S45 and planned to give up SLRs and heavy, conspicuous camera bags permanently. Following that there were an S80, a G7, G9 and an S95 that I use today. I have no problems making prints of 12 x 16 inches(30 x 40 cm) for my local club exhibitions from the files of any of these compacts.

2009 I was bitten by the DSLR bug again and had first a Canon 450D and then a 60D. I liked the gain in IQ and bought some nice large and heavy lenses. When my bag once more topped 4 kg I remembered my original dislike of lugging heavy and conspicuous equipment and sold the whole lot.

My search for comparable IQ with less weight and bulk has now (December 2012) taken me to the remarkable Sony NEX-6. Everything I need for now. Running mate is still my trusty Canon S95.

What I feel is missing is the clear understanding of why Steve is travelling in the first place. If he is doing it for commercial gain (which seems to be the case) I agree with his opinions. It is a hard job.

For "normal" holiday travellers I consider his recommendations will leed to a nightmare. Aside from lugging a back-breaking load everywhere you will become the focus of every shady individual in the vicinity. Your complete hand luggage is only photo gear? How comfortable will you be if your suitcase misses the plane and turns up 3 days later? To best use all your equipment you will need to turn up everywhere only at the best light - and wait - and wait. You like travelling alone? If you started off with a travelling companion you will soon be alone!

My pictures with my compact or DSLR plus 1 or 2 lenses (with backup compact!) will not be as perfect as Steve's. But I will have had much more fun and peace of mind.
