melgross: This is not a great display. It’s no competitor to Apple’s Pro display. This is 4K, apple’s is 6K. Apple’s gets to 1,600 nits, and can maintain over 1,000, possibly 1,200. This can maintain just 400 nits. No maximum brightness stated in the article. 400 nits isn’t even close to be able to display HDR content, whether creating, or viewing it.

For what it is, it’s expensive.

HDR for TV is a scam ? you clearly have not got a HDR TV then or if you do its a poor one, try watching a good movie in Dolby Vision on OLED vs None, you'll see the benefit . I personally like bright and Vibrant displays, its what i look for in a TV and Monitor

Roland Karlsson: Generally, synthetic DOF looks ugly. Now, I have to admit, that this video look nice. This was the best synthetic DOF I have seen so far. But two things.

1. It is always so that when you look closer, synthetic solutions in phones have serious problems. Not really useful other than for fun. I have never seen anything but toys.

2. Real video cameras for making film are huge beasts that moves on serious trolleys and such, with expensive lenses. All this to make smooth and fantastic films. So, why bother with a phone? It does not solve anything.

@tozz especially Kevin at Number 23

i agree unless your into this kind of stuff you wouldn't know. If last nights video had been shown to me a Video Virgin, i wouldn't have been able to tell if it had been produced by James Cameron or Kevin at Number 23 :)... BUT now Kevin has a way of doing Focus Pull etc...

GinoSVK: Dolby vision is a placebo signature for a most part, very few titles, only the high budget films as e.g. Netflix's 6 Underground /terible movie with outstanding visual/, actually looks better than classics HDR10.

Not sure what your watching but most new elements on Netflix are vision and atmos, its the premium HDR unless you have Samsung then your stuck in HDR 10 world, I can certainly say if I watch a movie on my Samsung then move to the vision set it’s better to me by a fair bit

Agree and Canon and Nikon will obviously be bigger as it supported the Olympics since day 1, in time Sonys will grow, when the old school folks adopt the tech. At the moment they will use what they use best.. Its only a matter of time.

Should have got a good one :) My HTS 5000 and FZ9 dont.... sure its not your HDMI lead switching it off, or switch off auto start :)

On article There can be only one: why isn't the EOS R3 an EOS R1? (580 comments in total)
In reply to:

AKPhotoArt: I go with theory #2
I think Canon will go the more reasonable way to offer two different high end models:
- a fast camera (the R3) with a moderate sensor resolution (I guess about 30MP). This is more suited for sports and news shooters than to shoot thousands of photos with insane resolution that no press agency will ever need (and nobody wants to store and process).
- a high res camera (maybe 90 to 100MP) with less speed for advertising photographers.... and I think this camera will be called the "R1"

Kind of right but when you hear the associated press have all moved to Sony A1 the scattergun large file debate doesn’t hold up.

Bigsensorisbest: Good article, I hope it's the second reason I've never understood why an ergonomic curvy Pro model with built in grip always has to have feeble resolution

and the R1 is 85 at 20 FPS and 21 at 40 FPS with Global shutter, and Tony and Chelsea know NOT.....

Kiril Karaatanasov: Theory #3 is pretty obvious.... Canon mirror-less cameras are great yet far from perfect. Canon are doing well to use the R3 naming telling customers it is not the big thing yet. That is pretty fare. It also means Canon are working on something bigger already.

PS R1 will have to stand up to Alpha 1 by sony and R3 is already falling short in few places.

i have to say in all the years on doing shoots ive only ever seen 1 Lady with a 1DX and she physically limped around... But Taz i see your view and its what you like, im thinking more along the lines what would sell and hows things in time change....Having a grip based unit even with a special super additional battery i think would be better use and tempt a lot more people to buy it...i think Sony showed this with the A1 just how powerful something can be, and yet be smaller, size isnt everything so i tell my wife :)

agree, and this formfactor is old now, proper pros love it normal man and his dogs want R5 size units....But as the associated press have all moved to A1s, is that not a sign things may need to change...its just too bulky..

Lees Channel: Great, perfect time to buy an Apple computer, right before they change architectures.

Im intrigued on the new ARM stuff, however I feel the first year will be tough as some none mainstream programs will prob moan and not work with it, I suppose time will tell. Im sure Apple will have thought of this hopefully, should be fun times ahead. Anybody know how they plan to address the change in architecture VS already existing programs tuned for Intel etc ? or won't it be an issue ?

Boss of Sony: My 2011 iMac is the longest lasting computer I've ever owned. In 6 months it will be 10 years old. I still use it for photo editing. It only cost about AU$1500 (about US $1150). But I would not buy one nowadays because comparable Windows PCs are much more affordable. If I was after a new computer nowadays, I'd pick up an ex-government Dell machine for a few hundred $, and add on a $200 monitor.

I priced up upgrading my Gaming machine yesterday, for anything comparable im looking at about 900 to 1000 UK sterling for an I9 or Equiv Ryzen and 64Gb ram,( mainboard chip and memory using my already present Vega 64 and drives) when you throw in the 5k screen and latest AMD 5000 the price isn't actually that bad.
