On article Samyang releases 85mm F1.4 AF lens for Canon DSLRs (123 comments in total)

Pedro Courelas: Samy, another 85?

Try something new.
Give us a EF 55 1.4 AF.

So youre actually agreeing with my point that 85mm is a far more popular focal length than the 50mm? Facepalm.

MinAZ: I wonder if it will be smaller/lighter than the Canon, which is a great lens but kinda big/heavy.

Can you read?

Why? An 85mm is more popular than a 55mm. They dont want to lose my money.

Not really humorous or clever. This lens will also work on a future a7 IV.

EcoR1: “ The FE mount means it works with full-frame Sony cameras...”

Who is writing these articles? DPReview, do something about this. FE-mount doesn’t mean anything, because there is no such a thing. Writing this kind of nonsense gives impression that this lens is not usable with Sony’s A6xxx-series. Newsflash, as a full frame E-mount lens it works with all E-mount cameras, apsc and fullframe alike.

Editors don’t make this nomenclature mistake when covering Nikon’s F-mount news. F-mount is always called as F-mount regardless of the lens type. Why is it so hard to do the same with Sony?

^ Not really. The FE designation was introduced after the a7 with FF sensor was introduced. Before that E-Mount was just for APS-C.

They probably never even intended to end up building FF sensors for the system, but ended up finding a whole market for it and ironically it is their primary focus now.

FE designation makes sense, because FF came after APS-C for Sony (opposite to every other manufacturer). Though I admit Sony should introduce a designated name for their APS-C line of lenses, new users to the system must find it very confusing, and not everyone knows APS-C came before FF in Sonyland.

But using the term "FE-Mount" is still incorrect and a real amateur error. dpreview out of everyone should not be doing this. It shows a real lack of expertise in the subject matter.

Really? Why on Earth would it not work?

Mortal Lion: The FE-mount doesn't exist. Its the E-mount. FE is not a mount designation. It is a lens designation, meaning it covers a full frame image circle. It will therefore also work in aps-c E-mount cameras but it's field of view will be limited to 36mm equivalent. Still a useful FOV.

@ matthew saville - Except FX lenses do exist though. So do FE lenses. What does not exist however is a Nikon FX-Mount or Sony FE-Mount.

virtualreality: For the last time...!
There is no FE-mount, it's E-mount.
Any E-mount lens works with Sony full-frame cameras.
This is an FE lens which means the image (circle) covers the full-frame sensor.

SafariBob - I cant tell if youre being sarcastic or not. But there is no such thing as an FE camera.

Melindra: I’ll keep my faster and only slightly larger Sony 2/28 instead of a more expensive and slower third party option.

I’m sure it’ll be a great optic though and might consider it at $250.

How do you find your 28mm performing at 24mm?

EcoR1: Hi Dpreview! Why did you publish this? You don’t usually mirror rumor-articles from Nokishita. I thought you have patience to wait and see if the rumored product is actually released. Is this a slow day or is this part of changed policy? If you start publishing more rumors where do you draw the line? I come to Dpreview, because I trust you have credible information. Please don’t disappoint me.

Its been announced. It is official and they were real leaks. Not a rumour.

Completely resesigned optical formula and focal length = simple retouch?

Its so embarrassing that dpreview constantly call it FE mount every time. That would be like calling it the Nikon DX mount and Nikon FX mount.

Their 29-240mm equiv superzoom doesnt even come close. Its also not collapsible and gigantic.

neod: It would give you a DOF similar to an f/4 on an A6000. So the 35mm equiv focal length may be ideal, the aperture is not.

I'd rather they produce a 35mm f/2 FE lens or a 24mm f/2 APS-C lens.

I guess I just miss my Fuji X100!

Um, no honey. It's the equivalent to a 16mm f/2 in APS-C format.

lightandaprayer: The camera is so small it looks like it is designed for a child's hands. . . At this point the viewfinder and controls are simply too small for me.

You are right. Sony should have made this compact travel cam with a DSLR size body and grip and added lead weights. Not to mention such a bulky camera like that would perfectly compliment your existing bulky DSLR.

BillGarrett: Many interesting specs on this camera; image quality may be another matter. I'm leery of that 24-200mm (equiv) lens. An 8x zoom range is very aggressive and portends major tradeoffs in image quality. I love the fact it's 24 at the wide end, but I'd prefer a less aggressive 24-120 range, even 24-85 if necessary, with superb IQ to a 24-200 range with so-so IQ.

You do know that the RX100 V already exists, right? Why would they make another with the same lens?

(unknown member): So far, Samyang is the only brand making pan cake lenses. Sony stop making it after 35mm F2.8. They should make compact lenses like 50mm F2.8, 85mm F2.8, and more.

Mind reading? This is an article about a Samyang E-Mount lens and comments are being made about said lens. How do you get confused thinking this is a general discussion about general lenses? LMAO
