rogerstpierre: The USA "legal" system will never cease to amaze me. The "copy" wasn't copyrighted at the time the stamps were issued, hence was IMO perfectly legal for everyone to use its image up to the time a copyright wad issued, at which point the stamp was phased out. What was the damage done that necessitated compensation? If anything, the artist should compensate UPS for the publicity his work received! Furthermore, would the artist made such a flagrant copy of the original at the time the original was still protected by copyright, surely he would have been sued and lost, hard to understand how he got his copyright.

Phil, the fact that people rightly call you out for being an idiot does not make them Anti-American; at most, they are anti-Phil. Matter of fact, not only do you not know whether any of us is Anti-American—I am probably one of the most pro-American people you will find here—you don’t even know which ones of us are Americans.

Your position is that of complete and utter ignorance, which is precisely why I told you that you make your country look bad. You clearly know nothing about copyright law, else you would have made a more intelligent point, or civics, if you think that saying that "country X's legal system never ceases to amaze me" is a fascist statement. This idiotic and you are being an idiot. A patriot loves his country and wants to make it better, he does not go around embarrassing it by attaching the Stars and Stripes to comments that would key low key for a high schooler. Seriously, cut this crap.

Also, DPReview is not your home, dummy.

Phil, no offense to you, buddy, but you sound like you are fourteen. Mom, don’t tell me how to live my life, uwaaaaa! You are making your country look like a bunch of babies. Don’t do that crap.

No, it isn’t? It’s exactly the same.

I don't think they thought this one through..

God I hope they do that already. Vertically filmed video needs to die, but I fully understand it when people say that it’s uncomfortable to hold the phone horizontally.

Mariano Pacifico: "...strong D850 sales lead to 8x increase in annual profit"

DPR subscribers will run to the nearest camera store to buy D850 before it runs out.

No, do not. This is an advertisement embedded in their Financial Report.

This isn’t even an advertisement. It’s downright nonsense. I sincerely doubt it will be in their report. DPR just did not bother to look at the past five years to see that FY 2017 was a very unusual year due to restructuring.

panther fan: Why this headline? The image divison had just an 76.2% increase in profit, so all that was driven by other parts of the business.
I mean that is great news for Nikon, but how many on this site are interested in the printer division of Canon or the gaming consol business of Sony? I think I am correct by assuming that most of us only care about the image division of the camera companies

> There is no such thing as operating profit or loss, only margins.

He is obviously talking about “operating income”. It’s not uncommon for it to be referred to as “operating profit”. The “operating margin” is operating income / revenue. Operating income being a thing is pretty much a prerequisite for the operating margin to be a thing. You can not have one without the other.

lacikuss: What a misleading title. It even reads childish... So when a company reports losses the previous year and suddenly makes any profits, then it is how many times better than last year?

lol

HFLM: It’s two different kinds of income. DPR is referring to the pretax income, you are referring to the operating income. The difference is that pretax includes financing and unusual expenses (like a $500MM restructuring expense last year), whereas the operating income is merely revenue minus cost of goods sold minus sales, general and administrative expenses.

Frankly, your numbers are much more pertinent to Nikon’s wellbeing, because so far not much has happened. They just didn’t have the unusual one-time expense they’ve had last year.

If anyone is actually interested in what is going on here, it’s a bit less dramatic than it may seem.

The annual reports aren’t out for this year yet, but it is very clear from the financials that this is just Nikon returning to their normal operations rather than any kind of achievement on their part. Their pretax income for FY 2013-2018 has been 746, 745, 320, 329, —79.1— and is now merely back to 318.

What happened is that Nikon incurred a $500MM unusual expense last year, which reduced their pretax income nearly to zero. This was the cost of restructuring. Now that that is out of the way, the unusual expenses are back down again and you get this very artificial increase in income.

I like cameras as much as the next guy here, but I doubt that they were any kind of saving grace here. It’s been turning into more and more of a niche industry every year. https://i.imgur.com/OfVDlno.jpg

LV is absolutely amazing. The reason they became so popular was precisely because they were not crap and kept a diplomat’s wife’s luggage from being soaked.

tkbslc: I would think photographers would applaud this move. Do you want people to be able to grab/view your images without even visiting the site or gallery you posted them to? Why are people acting like they have rights to all these photos that are not theirs?

He hasn't. Press the image and let it load. Then save it. You get the original image. I'm guessing this will be fixed somehow eventually, but it may be that Google will have to show previews only as a result, which will make browsing images in general a whole less pleasant for everyone.

snapa: When I read: " The three individuals were forced to leave King behind", all I could think of is WOW, I hope those 3 individuals were not his friends! Even if they weren't, they should have helped him get away, like they did. I could not imagine 3 people just watching someone fall down and just leaving him there to die, how cowardly and selfish they were to do that. I hope the three of them slept well that night.

@ex-military guys: Not trying to give you flack or anything, but in case of an ambush, are you not trained to stay in cover and not go for a wounded comrade that may be in the open and expose you to enemy fire? With the little information there is here, it seems to be exactly the case here.

@xiao: You have again convinced me that stabbing each other is some kind of great British pastime.

Much more so than the CM-1. Have you ever seen the thing? It’s a bloody brick.

Doesn’t make much sense to include it. This article is about how expensive generalist smartphones have progressed, not about a very exotic camera with smartphone functionality.
