Loreno Heer: This is the camera I would have bought if Leica did make this earlier. But I bought the M two years back. Never used the video or live view. Weight and body size is a bit heavy compared to the M6/7 therefore 100g less might make some difference. So definitely a step in the right direction for leica.

For all the people complaining about the price, leica cameras were always expensive. The M7 was around 5000-6000 when it came out 10 years back or so.

While indeed my M6 works perfectly fine after this many years, and still takes all new leica M lenses, the fact is: Photographic film has become extremely expensive. The film I like(d) to use costs around 40$ per roll plus another 40$ for development, that is like 2.20 per picture. If I fill my 16 GB SD card with pictures, I end up with about 800 to 1600 pictues until the card is full. That would mean to pay 1'760 to 3'520$ every time I fill my sd card....

just saying

Loreno Heer: So basically a Leica M. With M price, but without any of the benefits of a rangefinder camera and larger body? Keeping my M.

I have an M6, M240 and MM. Never had an S and never liked it because of its size.

Loreno Heer: It is funny how people here are apparently so upset about this camera. Fact is, it will be sold, a lot. It is a great camera to work with and it is fun to use. If you never used one maybe you should try before giving your oppinion. Many stores give you one to tryout for free for a few days. By the way, the statement in the article: "255 shades of grey" is wrong. As far as I know the sample-depth is 14-bit (maybe even 16) which would equal to 65536 shades of grey.

@Venture-star Switzerland. I got the M240 to try out for a weekend before I bought it. All I had to do is let them make a copy of my passport.

forpetessake: B.t.w. if the monochrome is so cool, how come nobody manufactures B&W TVs, monitors, laptops, cell phones?

Oh, yes, I forget, Leica is not in TV business, otherwise we would have been reading a similar hogwash about how great the monochrome TVs are. Maybe only Apple has enough clout to be able to sell monochrome phones at 10x normal price, but I doubt.

EIZO makes B&W monitors (http://www.eizoglobal.com/products/radiforce/gx540/index.html). There are still plenty of B&W screen cell phones.

Loreno Heer: TIL: people don't understand the meaning of rangefinder camera

I mean judging from the comments about the lack of autofocus and "weird" body design, I gather many people don't understand how the camera works, and that it is in fact a different concept from looking through the lens

Preamp: I'd bet 'The high-resolution 3" monitor with 921,600 pixels' ain't monochrome...

No it is not in fact, which has its benefits. The focus aid is showing in red on the monochrome image which greatly helps.

darklamp: Tell me something it does that a Sony NEX with 18-55 doesn't for a tenth the price.

Ah, yes, it has a red dot.

And while that 18-55 may ( or may not be ) optically great, the reality is that correcting CA and distortion is the norm and accepted as quite reasonable.

Oddly no fast 50mm equivalent at launch and no 85mm equivalent at launch. Surely that's a minimum requirement for a serious camera ?

And they don't even include an M mount adapter for the price. That's cheeky. Who else will buy it apart from rabid M mount owners ? ( Oh, yeah, celebrities - I forgot ).

I can't take Leica seriously any more.

How long before we see the gold version ( or platinum ? ) and the snow leopard skin clad version with matching carry pouch ?

They don't make cameras any more, they make accessories for celebs.

There were gold leicas produced already 1930 or so. and if I am not mistaken also leopard versions ...

The clip-on connector is for the wifi antenna.

The built in battery is rather weird as it is not replaceable from the battery compartment. It is probably used for the clock and settings when changing the main battery.

Jogger: Im not sure why DPR is so obsessed with the propensity for the a7 to choose 1/60.. only a newbie would have an issue with that. Hopefully someone buying a $1700 camera will understand what they are doing. Who do they think this camera is being marketed to?

And poor jpeg quality... on a 36 mp, 14 bit, no-AA, FF sensor!!?? Thats like buying a Ferrari and complaining that the Eco-mode isnt satisfying to drive.

The review is of the A7 (not A7r), it has 24 megapixels not 36
