As someone who has shot basketball (both high school and major college) since the early 1960s, I can say that shooting strobes, unless you work for a major news outlet like Sports Illustrated, is almost never an option. Back in the early 60s, that WAS an option but most venues took away that option for the average shooter. Most of the problem then was that photographers were running wires to second and sometimes third units and the danger the wires presented to the athletes caused all flash to be banned. Also, when available light is used, the ability to shoot at high frame rates can often result in the great photo that is missed in a single shot.
