ventur: cute lens, but who was the guy at Canon that woke up one day, looked at the 4 kit zooms and the solo prime they have and tought: what we really need is a slow macro prime with a built in flaslight!

i sai it again, cute lens, but was it a priority?

NEWS FLASH: Canon and people who buy Canon lenses doesn't care about your opinion. They made another awesome lens at a great price and will sell loads of them! It's always funny to watch forum idiots trying to use snide comments to talk down upon the geniuses behind the various camera companies we have.

JimW-203: The arrogance of Reuters is astounding! How dare the customer tell me, the great artist, what they will pay for? My new policy: henceforth, I will no longer accept payment from any customer who dares to specify what they want; they will take what I allow them to have and will do so with a deep bow of subservience.

sh10453, I believe that post went right over your head.

The Silver Nemesis: Good! But why the 45 mm? Why now?

Probably because they can't make a 50mm 1.8 VC and still achieve the same image quality and size.

To me the Canon looks better than Sony at high ISO, but I don't understand why. I would think the RAWs would be nearly the same if they were using a Sony sensor. I guess Canon can just get more out of the sensor than Sony?

Hilarious. I can't believe all the people in here taking that seriously. That's as funny as Chubbs from Happy Gilmore.

(unknown member): This lens may be a mechanical improvement over the original and I'd be surprised if it wasn't effectively silent. However, for the increase in price, it really should have image stabilization.

What the heck are you talking about? There is no price increase... Both lenses are $125.... For what you get Canon is practically giving this lens away. It's nearly half the price of the 40mm......

I guess people will complain about anything. Some guy at another forum was complaining because it has a metal mount!!! Apparently he can't deal with that extra ounce. lol

"Yes, the optics of the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM are the same as the original EF 50mm f/1.8 and EF 50mm f/1.8 II." ~Chuck Westfall, Canon USA

saiko: Looks like Yongnuo forced Canon to upgrade their shoddy EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens by giving a similar lens (better in some aspect like 7 vs 5 aperture blade) for less than half the price...

Canon users should thank Yongnuo.

Yeah Yongnuo "forced" Canon to release a revision to their lens on its 25th anniversary...... That was pretty dumb on their part.....

Nice images. A lot more interesting than most samples I see here. Thanks.

Wow the comments over here on the connect side are as asinine as the dpreview side. Nowhere does it say "professional photo editing tool", except in your post, and it's "utterly dumb", not "utter dumb".

HSway: Samples tell us 24 Art bokeh can be very jittery. I don’t say it lightly, I am not any of the bokeh fanatics or a Sigma basher and I am very happy with 50 Art and 60 Art in this particular respect. The point is that while this is absolutely OK with some, say, (14-) 24/4 lens the purpose of f1.4 lens fills also different roles where this is a consideration. I wish they take it into account with such fast lenses including UWAs and avoid rendition that really can be distracting and limiting for certain uses. (As distanced from the character; most people will agree on the difference - my Touit 32 can have unpleasant jittery bokeh @f1.8, it changes to character I love @f2.2, I could go on).
No it is not a disaster but it makes the potential of the lens less versatile.

Not that the standards are not high but thank you for the most interesting article.

I tend to agree the complainers are the ones with the egos. People with a little humility tend to just enjoy life, and what they have been given. Anybody in the humity camp understands that. Those in the ego camp tend to see other egos, and competing views. Funny how so many people come here to express their displeasure with life in general as displeasure for products and that have been made available for them. According to MY scorecard, this round goes to Conrad. BRAVO. lol

Digimat: really...i dont get it. its too expensive for entry level. but it seems to pack quite some hardware, but than, why is there no damn EVF in that body to compete with equivalent fuji/sony/m43 cameras? and its not a thing of beauty either...oh well...

Its pretty simple.... An EFV would make the body bigger and make the camera cost more...... Why make everyone suffer with a larger and more expesive camera when the EFV can clip right into the hotshoe for those that need one? I'm sure the percentage that needs one is quite small.

Lynda Botez: I have the first camera; after the major firmware update, I love this camera to bits. Can't wait for the M3. It's got to be a lot better, faster, etc. This size and weight make a great little camera, and the photos are amazing... If you haven't used one I wouldn't make up my mind against it until you try it. The small lenses are awesome too!

@digifanboy, what does the competition have to do with Lynda's love of the EOS M? NEWS FLASH: Only web trolls give a crap about the competition and want to make it a point of contention. The rest of us care about the camera we actually own and use.
