Yes. The eye-sensor will automatically turn off the rear screen, and deactivate the touchscreen, when it detects your face at the viewfinder.

There are quite a few 3rd party chargers which are cheaper than $50; I like the USB-powered dual chargers. The EF-X8 can be had cheaply if you are patient KEH has one for $24.

Also consider the XC16-50 for a small and light way to get OIS; pretty good image quality as well. It may not have WR, but it also costs a fraction of the XF16-80. Aperture-wise its only a bit ...

My only suggestion is to see if dirt has gotten in there. Try compressed air.
