Alphaville: Will I be able to make WhatsApp calls when the iPad version of the app finally gets released?

WhatsApp has never been in the iPads and I don't expect the lack of WhatsApp to change with the current iPads.

gphome: Unfortunately in our society, the punishments for this sort of stuff, as well as journalism sensationalism or click bait, are pitiful relative to the annoyance, time wasted, and mistrust it puts into our society.

What should happen if a company is proven to put out misleading advertisements (where it clearly would have known better)? A one year complete marketing ban as well as a hefty fine donated to internal charities that combat internet based addictions and anxieties.

But these companies are too powerful, and our society and the government structures we created are too weak, to change what is an increasing poison in our society. You only have to look at the Volkswagen emissions scandal, or the Boeing 747 Max air disasters for proof of that. Those companies will get off Scott free if looked at over a 5 year financial window, and in Boeing's case, they've literally commited manslaughter.

" You only have to look at the Volkswagen emissions scandal, or the Boeing 747 Max air disasters for proof of that."

It's not Boeing 747 Max, it's the B737 Max and the 747 is mostly phased out now for passenger planes. Other than that, I agree with you.

Somehow the closed bracket were part of the link. I fixed the reply:

All well and good but once the image goes through WhatsApp and others, the detail will be gone. Will the stylised photos be noticed?

Ken Seals: That all sounds really great! I wish they had done that for my MBP 16" 2019 :-( I moved up to this one from my 2015 15" MBP just before the virus hit. Sadly, with the Covid impact on my photography activities, I don't expect to ever purchase another MBP.

Same here. My 16” MacBook Pro (2019) could be my last Mac for a very long time. I wish Apple had done this sooner.

Is this direction a rejection of Jony Ive after he left Apple?

Thank you DPR for posting this! Before I read about Joanna Mendez here, I read about her in the Wired YouTube channel.

Her husband Tony Mendez helped rescue American diplomats taken hostage in the Iran hostage crisis in Tehran, Iran by pretending to be part of a film production crew dubbed the "Canadian Caper". The rescue was made into the movie, Argo.

Jer81: I would like a new Sony with the size of a XZ1 Compact.

Yes! I have the XZ1 and had the older XZ Compact. Both were great sizes. Sony doesn't appear interested in making real "compact" phones now though.

I have been waiting for what used to be a Sony Xperia feature for years to appear in iOS devices. iPad Air now has it, but no news of an iPhone with the feature. Fingerprint scanner combined with the power button.

This problem is about Lightroom for iOS 5.4 and is not about Lightroom CC or Lightroom Classic CC? Why compare iOS to Mac or Windows versions of Lightroom. PhaseOne doesn't even have a CaptureOne App for iOS.

fpapp: If you own any of the following film cameras:
Canon EOS 1V, Nikon F6, Nikon F5, Nikon F100, Nikon N90s, Nikon N90, Minolta Maxxum 9, Minolta Maxxum 7, they are all capable of recording metadata just like a DSLR.

There is a program, Meta35 http://www.meta35.com/ which can retrieve the data from the camera and add it to your film scans.

My F6 also has the ability to imprint data on the film in the space between the frames!

Of course Meta35 costs more than a dollar, but it does the work for you!

Bad news if you are on the latest MacOS versions (OSX 10.15, 11.0 Beta). They have no plans to update Meta35 to MacOSX 10.13 or later.

"OS X 10.9 to 10.12 inclusive (we do not plan to update the Mac OS version to OS X 10.13 or later)"

Techo: I have noticed one small change, but just a few weeks ago anyone had the ability to view images on a public IG account via a browser: https://www.instagram.com/dpreview/ and not have to login into the platform. Now the site is asking for a login. How long since this has been updated?

I noticed the change 8 months ago:

There can be a delay in seeing the login screen (scrolling to the bottom).

Photobucket, until they charged for third party hosting and blocked linking of images, which was when I left the site.

Photobucket was launched in 2003, Flickr Launched in 2005?

Adrian-Van: Firefox just released an update to notify its users when sites you are using may have been breached by hackers. Adobe was on that list. Worth checking out! Firefox Monitor is included with free usage of Firefox as your browser.

New breach or old breach? Adobe's been hit twice now.

It is interesting that Liquidmetal is mentioned because Apple had exclusive rights to the technology nearly 10 years ago?

I have been meaning to try it out but the difficulty is sourcing the UV flashlights and other black light source. They are difficult to find in normal hardware stores. Most places don’t carry them.

Wikipedia says the photo was manipulated to remove a finger. I wouldn't mind seeing the unretouched image.

"While the image was being prepared for exhibit in 1941,[16] the negative of the photo was retouched to remove Florence's thumb from the lower-right corner of the image.[17] In the late 1960s, Bill Hendrie found the original Migrant Mother photograph along with 31 other unretouched, vintage photos by Dorothea Lange in a dumpster at the San Jose Chamber of Commerce.[18] After the death of Hendrie and his wife, their daughter, Marian Tankersley, rediscovered the photos while emptying her parents' San Jose home.[18]
