Leonard Shepherd's current gear

Nikon Z7
Nikon Z9
Nikkor AF-S 300mm f/4E PF ED VR
For manual focus ease it is the best Nikon there is. For some aspects of AF high speed action it it still lags a little behind the same MP D850 though much improved with firmware updates since launch. For several aspects of AF including eye AF and video AF it is well ahead of the D850. IBIS with lenses without in lens VR can be useful.
The only weakness is "interesting" flare if you shoot with the sun near the edge of the frame.
Nikon AF Micro-Nikkor 200mm f/4D ED-IF
Nikon AF-P Nikkor 70-300mm F4.5-5.6E ED VR
Nikon AF-S Micro-Nikkor 60mm F2.8G ED
Still an outstanding optic despite being an over 25 year old optical design. An update with faster AF and VR is long overdue.
Extremely good performer for the specification and price point. Much better than earlier FX versions.
An excellent allrounder, optically better than a 50mm f1.8 - with the benefit of 1:1 focus for not much more money in the UK.
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 105mm F1.4E ED
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 180-400mm F4E TC1.4 FL ED VR
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 200-500mm F5.6E ED VR
Superb optically with sublime bokeh.
For me a superb wildlife and landscape lens.
Very good relative to the low price point. Cumbersome to handle. AF relatively slow.
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24-70mm F2.8E ED VR
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G ED-IF VR
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 500mm F5.6E PF ED VR
Excellent all round optic, though beaten by the S version.
Excellent optics and very fast AF - updated by the 120-300 f2.8 - a lens I cannot afford.
I rate it 5 star now supply has improved.
Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-200mm F4G ED VR
Nikon AF-S Nikkor Fisheye 8-15mm F3.5-4.5E ED
Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E III
Excellent compact lens. Optically first class. Heavier than it looks.
I like fisheyes! Two focal lengths for the price of one. Fisheye effect with a NEF image (not jpeg) removable in Lightroom for an approximate 12mm full frame lens effect.
First class TC. Usefully better than cropping an image by a similar amount.
Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E II
Nikon Nikkor Z 14-30mm F4 S
Nikon Nikkor Z 24-120mm F4 S
"Medium class" TC with performance dropping slightly compared to the 1.4 due to greater magnification of the captured detail - though still better than cropping the original image.
Very good, though not quite the equal of the 24-70 f4 S in the frame corners.
Still being evaluated. Optically distinctly better than the F version.
Nikon Nikkor Z 24-200mm F4-6.3 VR
Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm F2.8 S
Nikon Nikkor Z 24-70mm F4 S
Probably the best travel zoom currently available - from anybody. Works very well with a Nikon 6T CU using a 67-62 step down ring.
Not yet fully rated
Outstanding performance at the price point - clarifying S lenses for Z are better than equivalent F lenses.
Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm F1.2 S
Nikon Nikkor Z 50mm F1.8 S
Nikon Nikkor Z 70-200mm F2.8 VR S
Very big and heavy - superb bokeh
The best 50mm f1.8 so far from Nikon. - and optically by a significant amount.
Still being evaluated. AF speed with 2x on Z9 instantaneous
Nikon Nikkor Z 85mm F1.8 S
Nikon Nikkor Z MC 105mm F2.8 VR S
6 stops VR on a Z9 combined with 3D single point AF - I find a game changer for hand held macro
